http://www.whirlpool.net.au/ is probably the best place to search for info about broadband ISPs. It has a list of providers based on plans, locations, ISPs etc which you can search, as well as the forums which contain user reviews of ISPs.

What you consider 'cheap' and 'reliable' may not be what I consider cheap and reliable though :p also you need to know what you'll be using the net for the most (games, surfing, downloads etc) since different plans cater for different needs :)

That said, the most commonly used broadband providers are

Internode: http://www.internode.com.au/ and http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/bc-isp.cfm?id=9
iinet: http://www.iinet.com.au/ and http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/bc-isp.cfm?id=15
TPG: http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/bc-isp.cfm?id=18
Exetel: http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/bc-isp.cfm?id=340
iPrimus: http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/bc-isp.cfm?id=10

i've heard good things about all of the above (altho not so much iprimus..) and I've also heard really bad reports. sometimes it depends on your location, the quality of your phone line, that sort of thing

And of course telstra and optus but they will never come under the category of 'cheap' ..

That depends on your definition of cheap =P

They're cheap alright, but not cost wise.

Hm good point. ;)

Oh btw, sped_kid01.. if you currently have an optus mobile (or your parents do) and/or your fixed-line phone is also on optus you can get 3 or 4 months free each year. probably a saving of between $150 and $400 depending on what kind of plan you go for..

I would recommend internode...they are really good.

Was with them until I switched to my dad (he is a business only ISP @ well-com.net.au...cheap plug but i get 512/512 sdsl and no download limits/no capping *really cheap*...gotta love the family rates!!) and they were excellent....

as anti said, depends on your use needs. Just becareful of claims of unlimited downloads and the like as most homeusers dont get true unlimited and they either cap, limit or shape your downloads...............

Hi,
Pacific Internet DSL has 512kb/s connection for $54.95 a month with unlimited downloads.
www.pacific.net.au

Most of the slower connections (256kb/s) that are under $30 have a download limit of around 200mb to 500mb. It depends on how serious your music downloading is.
If it is light then DataCo have a 256kb/s with a 1gb limit for $25 per month.
www.dataco.com.au

Hope this helps :)

beware of cheap unlimited plans, sometimes they are slow

exetel has $30 8 gig 256 plan, free off-peak, static ip, $3/gig overlimit.

but after upping to 512/128, i realise 256/64 is inadequate as broadband, simply not fast enough, even for browsing.
