I believe Lorie is trying to say that both right and left wind extremism is bad, however this is slightly muddied in that, Bush and Bin Laden are both from the extreme right advocating aherance to their religious codes.

Sadam and Che (not to liken the two in any other way) both exist(ed) at the left of the spectrum.

So what I think Lorie meant is that extremist/fundamentalists like bush and ossama are bad and left wing extremist/radicals are also bad and that sitting in the middle he/she is basically fucked as there isn't a viable centrist alternative.

Oh right. I was thinking i had missed something in biology when learning about the reproductive systems and viable methods of pro-creation.

Absolution is definately more left than centrist, usually people on the right or on the left like to say they're centrist as to gain more support while moving towards the left or right. Maybe it's because they truely believe that since it's their believe it must be centrist and balanced, or maybe it's just more manipulation.

Most people like to think of themselves as fair, balanced and unbiased hence centrist - they are also convinced they are right (in a correct way) so evryone except themselves is naturally enough an extremist of one kind or another.

u took my simple blunt statement of mine and put it into logical terms. But it is true, we are just getting a clash of the left and the right, neither is acting correctly and both claim to have god on their side. As homer said, " i prayed this morning flanders and we both can't win:.

I don't think we are getting the strong middle ground.

Have you ever thought that the conflict between the leftists and the rightists creates the social norm of the 'middle ground' that you want? Co-operation between rightists and leftists does occur, however it occurs thru rigorous debate, compromises, decisions.

I dont completely understand what your saying but what the social norm wants and what i want are completely different things altogether.

Of course, you will fight for what you want... I on the right will fight for what I want... in the middle neither of us are completely happy but we manage to create a fairly balanced society.

Its as if this thread drifted significantly off topic and is now drifting back, ever so slowly.

Ironically the middle class is the middle ground for left and right. Right wing regimes promoting big buisness, imperialist agendes and little tax. Left wing governments put more pressure on big buisness and try to make tac even and try to help the middle class. Even revoulutionary Socialist regimes for the first years of teh revolution allow small buisness to function at market prices and be privately owned.

In our recent election (even though the Labor party is moving from left to right) both parties aimed to gain votes in the swing class.

Right wing regimes also promote individual achievement and work to provide an environment in which someone who works hard can be rewarded unlike leftwing regimes which believe people should all just be working for the common cause and it doesn't matter how hard you work.

George Orwell in 1984, the middle class leads the revolutions of the working classes for their own benefit in this way they are able to supplant the former ruling class and cement their power over the middle class.

Personally as a leftist I see that 'new' middle class eg tradesmen/small business operators lean right whilst 'old' middle class eg professionals, intelligentsia, etc lean left. Whilst the old manager class of the middle class leans right.

The lower class divides roughly 50/50 (though in asutralia leans right overall (Howard and his battlers on struggle street) this tends to be along the lines of those who know they are always going to be factory workers and the lowest (hierachly) aspirational class, working class who hope to become middle class.

Now we start to see that sections of society who are right-wing in nature are so because they personally want to ascend to a higher echelon and when they get there enjoy all the trimmings and trappings. Whereas those who are content with their current position are more likely to be concerned for others and to lean left.

In conclusion I am a democratic socialist.

And also an autocratic generaliser. :D

I agree with the majority of what you said, although are you specifically talking about Australia because the lower class in a country such as the US is heavily right, and the upper class is considerable distance left of the right, yet still right i believe.
