hey, im just starting yr 12, and im using my brothers account here... i was just wondering, what does the 'conventions' of crime fiction mean?! what are they exactly? are they like 'detective', 'setting' etc? or am i completely wrong?!

all the best for ur exams.. i wish i was u! im just starting! arrgh! :( hehe

The conventions essentially are the staples of a given genre - for example Bond movies will always have suave actors and nifty gadgets. Crime fiction is similar in this respect in that it has recurring events/objects/blah that keep popping up. Examples include the detective(and the type of detective - nosy old women generally belong in the Golden Age), a crime/mystery, a resolution of sorts, denouemonts and whatnot - they essentially are the things that identify something as crime fiction.
This is a rather basic answer but I get the idea that that is what you were sort of aiming for - if it isn't, just say so and I'll try to give a more specific answer.

coventions are like the recepie for a genre. if you were making a chocolate cake, you would need coca. simal\rly, if you're doing crime fiction,, you need a detective.

more confusingly, a text doesn't have to have all the conventions to be classified as crime fiction

general overview of conventions...

General:
- crime, or suspicion of a crime.
- Victim.
- Criminal.
- Suspect.
- Witness.
- Clues/
- Denouement.
- Twist.
- Red herring.

Cosy school:
- Closed circle characters.
- Isolated setting.
- Less gore.
- Upper class.
- Conservative detective.

Hard boiled:
- Suffocating atmosphere.
- Detective protagonist.
- Corruption.
- Chain crimes.
- Femme fatale.
- City setting.
