First of all, I like China.

Secondly, once China's economy booms, it will overtake that of America due to the work force. It will take time but it will happen. and when it does, there will be another country that replaces it in cheap industrial produce, like britain was before it. Maybe it will be Africa, maybe not, maybe somewhere like Russia.

The point is that as many ways as there is to eradicate poverty, it will never completely happen, it's souly a utopian almost communist ideal, that goes against the life cycle and human nature.

I think we must take into account the morality of men. Human nature cannot be removed from the equation. The emotion of greed will stop ANY attempts in reducing poverty.

That's nonsense,if Bob Brown were elected prime minister we'd have a very differently run economy but it would still be a democracy. By the same token if Ron Paul or Ralph Nader were President of the United States, you are infusing two different concepts.
You just said yourself that politics dictates the economy. Thanks.

And what dictates politics? Well, democracy is sure one way to do it.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahha. China's economy is about to get totally fucked because of the aging population problem due to the one child policy.

Manufacturing jobs are moving to other SEA nations as the Chinese want conditions and stuff.

China's economy isn't going to take over the USA's at any point in our lifetime, thanks for playing.

That seems very much a hybrid between capitalism and socialism. You allready admitted that you don't agree with pure, free market capitalism, but I don't really see you're theory more incliend towards capitalism then socialism.
Sound money is it, as well as the healthcare and the education. Two things out of an entire governmentally run system that I feel are necessary to the benefit of society as a whole. Provide the individual with the resources they need to thrive but also allow for individual incentive.

Works a charm.

DIF's contributions are always funny. :shy:

@ topic: If we (1st world countries) are able to provide a decent education and adequate food + shelter to those people living in poverty, we could probably expect a rise in living standards to the point where basic necessities are covered for the future generations.

Ok well I live in china and I'm pretty sure I know that the one child policy hasn't existed in 10 years, maybe it's been talked up in Australia but it deffinatly has not been inforced.

p/s I like what Rohan has to say :)

Depends on the nation.

If they have sane policies and allow foreign investment, foreign trade and low tariffs and corporate taxes then yes then can minimise poverty.

The problem with this world is too much controlled trade rather than free trade, Too much Social welfare programs instead of practical long term solutions such as job creation and relying on free markets.

If all foreign aid programs were pulled out I would guarantee you it would be the greatest thing that happened to this world because it would stop dependency and encourage people to finally stand up to corruption and greed giving the government who receive those aid no weapon against their people.

Russia's already got a higher per capita GDP than China. The labour there is not cheap. And India's developing at the same rate a China, so that's no longer an option for a post-China world. Really, the only possibility would be Africa, if it can produce a stable political and legal structure, or South-East Asia.

Also, i believe this post is concerned with eradicating absolute poverty. Not relative poverty.
Absolute poverty is the small staving African children who's parents both have AIDS and they have no future attempting to continue to farm the same over-used plot of land as hundreds of generations before them.
Relative poverty is single-mom of four in Redfern earning only twenty quid a year.
Absolute poverty would be very easy to get rid of and is not a utopian idea. However, I agree that relative poverty will always exist.

You live in Hong Kong. It's virtually an entirely different country. Go live on the mainland and try to pop out kids.

You're a fucking idiot.
Those people rely on foreign aid to survive. They literally can't grow enough food to feed themselves. And you want to take their lifeline away?
What the hell do you think would happen? They'd all cheer? Or they'd go "well, i guess we better do something now. Cos i've just been fucking around up til now. I was just having some fun, you know, being on the verge of starvation and all. But now i'm going to have to actually work."
Again: You're a fucking idiot.

Poverty can be eliminated, though will it be eliminated? I very much doubt it.

It has already been said in this thread, but it is not in our best interest to eradicate poverty. In our country yes, in others no.

the powers that be rely on keeping the poor effectively enslaved in order to keep the global financial machine running smoothly...think about it it doesn't require any long stretch of the imagination

capitalism = feudalism
