I'm building a motor with a D Cell rested on styrofoam cup with paper clips and insulated copper wire which is rolled into a coil

When a bar magnet is pointed at it it should spin.

Is it any different if I use a speaker magnet because I don't feel like going magnet hunting.

The problem with a speaker magent, is that there isn't a positive and negative end like a bar magnet has. It consists of two magnets, a circular one around a middle one, one positive one negative. Hence I think you have to start hunting.

Well it did make the thing spin a little. But then it stopped.

So it's not a good idea.

Do you know where I could get my hands on a bar magnet?
