This actually brings the question:

"What if there are 2 top players who have the same number of points by the end of the final round?"

In that case, we will have a play-off between those players and the winner will be the final winner of the competition.

Actually yeah why don’t we just use the fide system. 1 point for win .5 for draw and 0 for loss

Round 3 fixtures have now been released!

You can view them here:

If you see your username with a “Bye” underneath, it means that you don’t have a game this round. This will only happen once with each player because we have an odd number of players.

Round 3 will conclude on Wednesday 7 April (or before if all games are played before the final date).

Note that there has been a change in the points system. From now on we will be using the FIDE system (Fédération Internationale des Échecs | International Chess Federation). Your points will only change in value, not significance.

Please make sure you attempt to communicate with your opponent as there are rules which apply in case a game is not played by the final date.

Don't forget to join the Discord server if you haven't already!

Good luck! :D

why does some have automatically win? Shouldn't they all be draws not to give unrealistic expectation.

An automatic draw occurs when:

- Neither players contact each other
- Both players contact each other but are unable to schedule a time to play.

An automatic win occurs when:

- A player contacts an opponent and receives no response by the final date.
- An opponent willingly forfeits.

The automatic win rule has been established to be fair to players who are active throughout the competition and are making consistent efforts to contact their opponents and play their games. Unfortunately a few players have just disappeared and have become inactive on BoS as well, which causes a problem to those that are active. At the same time, we can’t disqualify those players because not only might they come back at any point in time, but the competition is also intended to be more “chill” than harsh - an opportunity for people to have fun while retaining some competitiveness. :D

Hi everyone! Due to the disappearance/inactivity of several players and the need for this competition to have a winner, we will adopt an alternative format involving only players that have been active and attempted to play their games throughout this competition.

This alternative format will constitute a set of knockout games and the qualified players are:

@IAmWinston - @nilatar - @username_2 - @pikachu975 - @tejmehta3108.

The alternative format will be short in duration as there won't be as many games left to play, but the ability to play games and to have an ultimate winner would be restored under this format.

How the format will work:

IAmWinston v nilatar (semi-final game 1)

username_2 v TBD (semi-final game 2)

In order to determine the player who will face username_2, we will have 1 quarter-final game:

pikachu975 v tejmehta3108

A huge thank you to all the other players who participated, and best of luck with your commitments! :D

The quarter-final and semi-final games are over! Here's how things went (in order):

Quarter-final:

@tejmehta3108 defeated @pikachu975 in their dedicated quarter-final game and has secured a place in the semi-final, where he will face @username_2!

Semi-finals:

@IAmWinston secured his spot in the final after a crucial win against @nilatar!

@tejmehta3108 secured his spot in the final, after an intense and close game against @username_2!

Congrats to IAmWinston and tejmehta3108 for reaching the final!

A huge thank you to pikachu975, nilatar and username_2 for their participation and great performances which allowed them to come a long way in this competition!

The final:

The final game will surely push the finalists to their limits, as they have both proved that they deserve to reach such an advanced stage in the competition. There is no doubt as to how close their game will be. However, only one player will be victorious!

IAmWinston v tejmehta3108

Who do you think will win this game? Feel free to vote in the poll above!

Good luck to both players, and may the best player win! :D

Congratulations to @IAmWinston for winning the final game and becoming the Bored of Studies Chess Competition Champion!

It is finally over!

We have come a long way in this competition and have witnessed several talented players prove their skillfulness.

Of course, we encountered some obstacles throughout this competition and our response effectively allowed us to keep the competition alive whilst retaining the strongest players, who gave their best, particularly in the latter stages of the competition.

The top 5 Bored of Studies chess players are:

1- @IAmWinston
2- @tejmehta3108
3- @nilatar
4- @username_2
5- @pikachu975

A huge thank you to all the other players who participated!

Will there be a next edition of this competition? We can definitely make it happen, however the rules will have to be thoroughly revised and the competition will run during a period where everyone has free time (summer holidays, when HSC and uni semesters finish), so that it works for everyone! Alternatively, there is another type of competition I’m thinking of which will be much more inclusive of Bored of Studies members as it will not deal with chess specifically, but with fun in general! We’ll see how things go then! :D

Merci for organising, Jimmy.
