It all depends, but i dont think you should put restrictions on who you're willing to date. Just go with the flow, if something happens, it happens, and like someone already said, if the friendship's strong enough it'll survive. either that or you find out that they're not someone you want to spend time with, so there's no loss, you probably would have discovered that eventually anyway.
