i still haven't seen herzog's nosferatu yet. i really should, the clips i've seen look gorgeous.

herzog really owned this decade. aguirre, stroszek and the mystery of kaspar hausar are all fantastic.

Not having seen all of Herzog's 70s offerings it's hard to go past Coppola for me.

Speaking of Coppola, he's got a new movie coming up next year. It'll be his first in 9 years. Not getting too excited though, his 90s stuff was mostly pretty meh..actually, everything he directed after Apocalypse Now was pretty meh.

have been keen to see badlands for a while too

and though i love manhattan a lot more, Annie Hall surely deserves a mention.

edit: though i haven't seen it, i'm sure most fellini enthusiasts would add Amarcord

Get Carter is another brilliant movie

hard as nails movie, and a great michael caine performance. i find the second half moving in an odd kind of way. another pioneering film for violence - and a nice take on british 'noir'. it's a gritty ass film, and instead of skyscrapers we see dirty red brick commission hosues and smokestacks of a filthy industrial newcastle.

also, in the same vein of hardboiled, Dirty Harry is a 70s movie. I'm embarrassed to say i've never seen it

Mean Streets is a solid scorsese movie not mentioned yet also

Carrie. Apocalypse Now. Taxi Driver. The Godfather. Deer Hunter. One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest. Chinatown. The Exorcist. A Clockwork Orange.
