Hey, I'm at usyd at the moment but I was thinking of applying for MQ mid year doing a BCA (drama). I went to MQ the other day and the woman at the enqiury desk was no help at all and made me climb 8 flights of stairs to find another office, which she failed to notice had been moved...to the 1st floor!!!! Oh well, anyway, just wondering if there was anyone here doing the course that could give me some kinda insight into what's involved etc? All the info I've got is really sketchy... Anything would be great!

Basically, this will be the structure *taken from the handbook* of your degree. It'd be wise to call in and ask the information how much you can get credited towards this degree from USyd.

http://www.mq.edu.au/BCA/index.htm Thats the main page for the degree.

Furthermore, http://www.mq.edu.au/BCA/help/faq.htm contains common questions.

http://www.mq.edu.au/BCA/contacts/index.htm<--those are the contacts.

Hope that helped :)

Thanks...yeah, I've looked at most of those pages, the handbook was a tad confusing but I'll probably e-mail one of those people about it, thankyou!

Why the hell are you quoting the person asking the question, and asking them the exact same question they are asking?

Did it warrant the multiple "?????????" ?

If that wasnt enough, you failed to actually READ my post about the official information and how to get it.

Did i miss anything?

Yeah, I agree- Korn, remember that when you write something on the net, expression points change the tone a lot. When I first read your post, I thought you were being negative or sarcastic or something- just turn the punctuation knob down one notch, otherwise you confuzzle us all :)

Also to the poster, remember there's a BCA(International) degree as well,

http://www.cal.mq.edu.au/degree.php?edition=2005&id=21060 shows exactly what you have to do in one of the degrees, and http://www.cal.mq.edu.au/degree.php?edition=2005&id=21061 is the international version.

Oh hurrah!

Finally, I can put some *constructive* input into this forum.

I happen to do the BCA (International Studies) degree, here's a rough overview of what I'm doing this term:

Generally, a lot of it is arts management (marketing 101 etc), but also learning about things that can influence the arts - "What is Contemporary Art", but also things like critical and cultural studies (like HSC society and culture I presume) that can be related to arts/interpretation of art.

Argh, it's so late and my head is going fuzzy. Any specific questions? Those I might be able to answer more clearly :)

haha.

Generally, the course is supposedly designed for wannabe performers gain the skills needed to actually work at a "real" job on the side - event management etc, event marketing etc etc. Hence compulsary subjects like Marketing and accounting...

Oh wait, I lie. Marketing101 isn't a prerequisite for a 300 level subject, but is compulsary to do anyway (as is BUS250 I think, or 240... can't remember).

Marketing is ok... not having a chance to rest after marketing assessments sucks though. :(

Thanks for your replies, is there any type of practical component to the course at all? Or is it mainly about business stuff related to the arts? :p

Depending on what you do, yes there are practical elements. You are also able to major in things like dance by doing some fancy cross-Uni thing (I was looking at doing this myself, but travelling to UNSW didn't appeal to me). However you don't really get to touch any of the "fun stuff" until 2nd year, which is when it becomes a lot more focused on your specific major.

But be warned - from what I know, there is no real "drama" courses at Mac - although I do think there are a couple of compulsary subjects that study scripts, shakespeare/drama in past eras etc. You'll be able to apply what you know to a lot of the ARTS assessments though - I love it... I can twist all of them to dance (you can do the same thing for drama, and talk on and on about your favourite actor/production etc).

Thanks for that, sounds like an interesting course (even if I'm not very business minded!), there seem to be less creative arts courses at uni's in sydney than there are in say, melbourne, and maq is the only one (i think) that even does a BCA...which ends up being a straight BA i think?

No. The big difference is that whilst there ARE about 12 or so credit points to do whatever you like, the BCA still has a direction (albiet somewhat weak in comparison to say, a Law degree) and certain units you MUST do, or pick from a selection of. A BA generally lets you do anything within limits.

That being said, most of the courses in the BCA I'm doing are the ones I'd do in a BA anyway - all my creative writing bits are in, as well as the couple of business subjects I'd feel guilty not doing (I did "fun" subjects in the HSC, telling myself I'd settle down a little for Uni and learn something "serious"). I also have a few credit points left over for doing fun stuff like Ancient History... as well as having access to a couple of BCA-only courses.

All in all, not bad...

BA has no limits apart from credit point quotas you need to satisfy.

If you do undertake the BCA(drama) you might be interested in the CUL units.

http://www.handbook.mq.edu.au/unitcodeprefix.php?edition=2005&ulevel=ug&unitCodePrefix=CUL

It seems the theory is very heavy until 3rd year, when you will be available to do the actual unit of performance. There are however a substantial number of drama people at macquarie and they hold various things around the campus so its not all doom and gloom until then, you could be performing whilst doing the theory through plays, productions, stand up, etc.
