im interested in the BA journo course @ CSU, but am aware that CSU doesnt release their UAI cut-offs AND also for this course require ADDITIONAL CRITERIA.

I was wonderin if ppl who are doin the course or who haf friends doin the course could shed some insight into what kind of tings they did which counted towards the ADDITIONAL CRITERIA?

also wot range UAI did ppl achieve who are doin the course?

thanku!

I think you get sent out essay questions, thats the additional criteria.. Fro and Bex both do comms, they'd have a better idea than I

I applied for it last yr, in ur application you have to write two essays, along with copies of any experience you've had in the media/ brodcast industry i.e work experience certificates, TAFE or other accademic transcripts. Also you have to be able to have someone in the media/ broadcast industry act as a referee (also an idea to get reference letters from those kinds of ppl)
With that particular course they look at prior experience a bit more than they UAI So my suggestion is get as much experience as you can CSU is really tough on their selection criteria.

i dont reckon they're that tough on experience...like i got in for a comm course at csu and all i had was a couple week's work experience + stuff i did during school...

the extra criteria isnt all that important..just read over previous posts and u can see there how its done..the essays that u do are pretty simple..i did mine the day before it was due and it was fine and i still managed to get in..

the journo course isnt very full on..most of the comm course are about 12 hours a week (well 1st semester anyways) ..its very english based. all the comm course are basically the same first year cept for one subject...its said to be one of the best courses for journalism.

as for uai's, i spoke to one of the dudes last year and they suggested that eighties was pretty good indicator of getting into the course easily..but thats not official..i know people that got in the 60's and 70's that are doing journo..

well ill tell u what i did to get in (not for journo, public relations, which is the same criteria):
- a week @ a production company
- half a week @ a graphic design studio and the other half at a pr consultancy
- a week at channel 9
- put down 3 people down for referees, a pr specialist, a p.a to the ceo of a production company and an actor

plus i was involved in school media stuff - filming, writing etc but yeah just get some experience and u should be right, just as long as ur keen..

Say the editor of the Northern Daily Leader, the biggest regional newspaper in NSW, was to give me a reference.. (I did work exp. there in year 10)... would that be enough?

Best journalism courses as far as I have heard overseas are at at Columbia in the US, University of Westminister and Dublin City University in the UK.

It is impossible to compare really.... plus being in the best course doesn't necessarily mean that you will get the best jobs there are heaps of other factors involved.

Oh bex three month paid internship, that sounds great!

I can't be bothered reading all of the replies, but HELLO! I want to do Journo @ CSU in Bathurst...Coz apparently it's the best Journo course next to UTS?

Edit:
I became unlazy and read the rest of the posts... I don't have any "professional" references, but I've just started writing stuff for the Parkes paper and another local one, so that'll give me 6 months under my belt.
Fingers crossed?

Yeah guys, don't stress.

It's true about the UAI's - 60-80s somewhere in there will get you in I would say.

I did my essays the day before they were due also, it was all so long ago, but I would suggest to make sure you present a bit of individuality and pizzaz, 'cos they won't buy into intellectual waffle. Just show you can think about things.

I would say it would be good to mention all the things you're planning to do. But also just get stuff published. Anywhere. You're local papers are a great place to start. To the people from regional areas, talk to editors there. I'm sure that would love a youthful input and little publication need the support, they're usually drastically understaffed.

I think I might go for early entry into CSU too, if it's possible for Journalism.

unless they've changed it all you can't apply the straight Journalism degree early, BUT one of my friends applied early for the Sports Journalism degree and then drop the sports component before you get to University. Look into it though.
