Hi! I was wondering if doing Medical Science for 3 years is a complete risk in order to apply for Graduate Medicine. Also, if one is not successful in entering Graduate Med, is Optometry at UNSW available, or is it mainly a course for HSC students ?
Thanks guys.

ummmmm im not sure. ive applied for med sci but i think it depends whether you want to do research, or med. if you dont get into med first time you can try again. i know someone who got through on their third go at gamsat. it also depends if youd really enjoy doing the course itself. alot of 2nd and third year stuff is done in the med faculty. also if you dont get in first time for med you could do an honours year for med sci then apply again.

it really depends if you are up for the long haul of 3 years then atleast 4 years. just give it your best effort. why not apply for optometry? or do you really want to do med?

umm 2nd and 3rd yr in grad med is clinical..
only in yr 12 leavers med is it a medsci stuff

like in a typical course for yr 12 leavers
1-3yr "pre-clin" equivalent to BMedSci + Clinical thinkin [(1-2yr) in 5 yr courses]
4-6yr "clinical" ure in hospital learning

Grad med
1yr MedSci + a bit of Clinical thinkin
2-4 yr Clinical

id say BMedSci is lik BSci for career options.. its can be broad or specialise.. but it isnt lik medicine.. no clinical thinkin parts

I don't think its a 'risk' at all.
I think its a bit advantageous to have med sci as an undergraduate degree when applying (yes I'm a bit biased, having just finished the degree), in terms of subjects and being able to major in 4 subjects at the end of the course (in comparison to 2 majors for B science). So if you're not accepted into med after the 3 years, you have a great opportunity to do honours and then research, or apply again (as alot of people have mentioned).
