B-Commerce @ Monash vs Melbourne Uni (1 Viewer)

Hey guys, I was wondering if I could get your opinion on this. I know that each uni has its pros and cons, but I would like to get your invaluable insight on the matter. I'm tossing up between going to Monash or Melbourne Uni. I'm not sure which will give me a more of an edge in terms of employment as well as they're curriculum. From what I gather, Monash has a more traditional curriculum, while Melbourne has changed it to offer more variety and general subjects, i.e they're breadth subjects,including subjects like geo and music. Because of that, I am leaning more towards the Monash side as I like the traditional approach, but trying something new might be good for me as well. Both provide double majors am I right?Thanks in advance for all your insightful comments.

If you are doing two majors... what do you intend to major in? UniMelb restricts the combinations of majors that you do because of the breadth components, where as Monash allows which ever as long as you can fit it into your program.

And if you intend to major in economics and something else, then do the Eco degree, there are even LESS irrelevant core subjects there. You can also fit in another major.

Also Monash also has some sort of 'breadth' type of thing... but these are optional. I LOVE the flexibility that Monash Commerce and Economics has... so I would go there.

Employment wise... UniMelb actually share their HIGH graduate employment statistics... so I'm guessing it would be better.

I'm currently thinking of doing Accounting and Finance as my Majors, but I will probably do a post grad, either a Bachelor of Law, a JD in Law or a Masters in Commercial Law. I'm not really inclined to practice law, rather I'd just like to have it as an edge in terms of employment and I think that law would be extremely useful within the corporate sector, which I am focusing on.

On the other hand, do you mean that with Eco, you could take on a 3rd Major if you wanted to? Wow!!!Thanks again for the reply.

If your interested in Accounting, it doesnt really matter what university you go to..Melb Uni has a far nicer campus (and is basically in the city), while at monash you can do double degree's

Also a JD will not give you an 'edge', Law degree's are the new 'arts' degrees, i.e. massive oversupply.

Accounting and Finance majors can be taken in both in Monash and UniMelb.

Bachelor of Economics... 3 majors?
Ouch... you'll be two subjects short from it.

Do Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Economics double DEGREE at Monash... in 2009 you needed like 92.15... so you can fit three majors in there... and a few subjects left over I think.

Yeah... if you want to triple major... do Monash Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Economics...
If you want to stick with Accounting and Finance... do UniMelb Commerce... but 95.20 was required in 2009.

Wow!Really? I thought having a Masters of Commercial Law would help...I heard something about Melbourne having Minors, as well as Majors with they're breadth subjects. But would it be wise to do B-Commerce in Melbourne, then Masters in Commercial law in Monash?

Mabye, i don't really know that Masters course
Dont worry about 'Majors' and 'Minors' per se, all that matters (i.e all that employers look at) is what subjects you've done (and your marks in them).

Are you a rural student? If so, 88 is only needed for UoM rural students to enter commerce now. UoM have a very HIGH employment rate. They have a beautiful campus in the CBD of Melbourne (therefore easy transport etc). Any more Q then feel free to ask, i know a fair bit about UoM.

Unfortunately i don't know alot about Monash.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry, I am not a rural student, but by grace, I managed to get an ENTER that is above the estimated ENTER required for Commerce at Melbourne University, but just below the below ENTER of Com/Law at Monash, so tough I guess. I'm not too fussed about it, Commerce @ UoM is a great alternative, and I think my post grad could possibly make up for my initial plans. On the flip side, I'm actually excited about it! I have walked around UoM campus several times, and its a beautiful campus indeed, plus it gives you an excuse to walk about the city... . But I was wondering, would lets say a Masters in Commercial Law or Intellectual Property be able to compensate for not being able to take the bachelor of law in monash? I don't really want to practice law, rather, use it as an edge for future employment as stated earlier, but I am indeed surprised that law degrees are the new "arts" degree....

But what if I wanted to do a bachelor of law after then, since a law degree cannot be compensated for?

Sorry for my ignorance but I can't see why doing a masters right after is considered being a loser.Is it because people will think you lack in experience and therefore do not know what to aim for, so you just did a law masters for the sake of it?

I thought,considering the current economic downturn, that it would be harder to get jobs, and even harder for those without a double degree or post grad? Plus I genuinely would like to study that Masters because I have an interest in it.

Not really the case now with the Melbourne model in place. There is no ugrad law available anymore. Doing commerce ugrad then law grad will be the norm for most people wanting to be high achievers.

Depends where from, a law degree from Melbourne uni will definitely give an edge in the corporate world.

Doesn't really matter too much, I got a heap of friends at both Monash and Melbourne Commerce. Courses are similar in difficulty (Although I must say some of UniMelb subjects are harder). Prestige at UoM is higher than Monash for Commerce but yeah, if you can go Melbourne then go, but Monash isn't too bad at all as an alternative.

Yeah Law degrees are getting pretty popular, atleast it gives me the motivation to keep my marks up since it's a pretty competitive field.

if you want to get into law

go to monash do commerce one year, get an average above 75 then transfer to com/law

easy

best way to do it and will get you a job in top tier law firm or IB if you are good at interviews

Hey guys, thanks for all your advice!! I just enrolled in Melbourne Uni Commerce, and am probably going to head in the direction of doing a JD in Law which is an additional 3 years. Alternatively I can try to get into a Chartered Accountancy Firm after I graduate from my Bachelors of Commerce if I don't really take to law. I'll try to do some law-based breathe subjects, such as Fundamentals in Law, which Melbourne Uni offers in order hopefully get a taste of law to see if that is really my passion, unless by some miracle that I get into com/law 2nd round at monash as I was only 0.25 off the mark. Either way I guess its alright.
