Does anyone know what determines a speaker system's performance?
Would the maximum power output be the one? If so, how come those Logitech surround sound systems (around 100watts) cost in the hundreds while some other less well known brands has a max output in the thousands but cost only around $100?

Power output means shit. Whenever you see 'PMPO' run. PMPO has nothing to do with audio quality or sound, most $50 speakers will say 1000 Watt PMPO which means shit.

If you want some advice, firstly go with a reliable brand, such as logitech, creative, klipsch (high end stuff), Bosche (spelling ?) etc.

What you want to be looking for is RMS power. Higher the RMS the better. I've got the Logitech digital z5500 5.1 speaker system, cost me about 480, beautiful system, plays 5.1 dvd's like crazy and music pumps hard. Comes with a 10" Ported sub.

Anyway, just summing up, go with a reliable brand, check out the RMS rating on each satellite/speaker (not PMPO or any other bs) and test out the speakers before you buy.

Also be wary of brands like Boss that have subs selling for $60 and claim that they are 1000 Watt, crap like that. This just leads back to getting a good brand.

EDIT : Meant the logitech 5500's, not creative

Thank you.

LOL. The Logitech Z-5500 was exactly what I was looking at when I read your response. That is being sold at $489.95 in ebay.

EDIT: Creative? Same model but different brand? :S

Btw, so what would you rate this as for AU$105?

Total RMS power: 70 watts RMS
Satellites: 45 watts RMS (2 x 7.4 watts front, 15.5 watts center, 2 x 7.4 watts rear)
Subwoofer: 25 watts RMS
Total peak power: 140 watts
Frequency response: 40Hz - 20kHz
Drivers:
Satellites: (2) 2" drivers per satellite
Subwoofer: 5.25" ported driver
Speaker dimensions (H x W x D):
Satellites: 8" x 2.5" x 3"
Subwoofer: 9" x 6" x 9.25"
Signal-to-noise ratio: >96dB

you get what you pay for. Total rms power of 70 is very low for a 5.1 system, in comparison the $480 5500's are a total of 500 rms. Compare this to the rms rating of the 5500's in comparison to the sub and satellite/centers and you'll see what i mean. But i guess for $100 it aint bad, but if i was only spending one hundred on speakers, i'd go for a half decent 2.1 system at max rather than a crappy 5.1.
