"in the margarine industry, Alkenes are often hydrogenated to convert unsaturated oils into solid fats that have a greater proportion of saturated molecules."

A) using ethene as an example, write an equation for this reaction and state the type of reaction this represents.

B) describe a test that could be used to confirm all the ethene has been converted

any help please?

a) reaction: hydrogenation of ethene, e.g. addition of H2 (hydrogen) to ethene. Alkenes are unsaturated (presence of dbl bond, whilst alkanes are saturated).

C2H4 + H2 -> C2H6

b) Test: bubble the ethene through bromine water in a test tube, if the bromine water does not decolourise all the ethylene has been converted to ethane.

^ This. The key thing is that you combine your knowledge of what is a saturated (alkane) and unsaturated (alkene) compound and the bromine experiment.
