Say my rank in Mathematics is 4.

The assessment marks for the top five are:
#1 90 john
#2 87 paul
#3 86 mark
#4 84 (me)
#5 81 tom

If the rankings in the HSC exam are:
#1 92 (me)
#2 86 john
#3 85 paul
#4 83 tom
#5 81 mark

What would my aligned mark be?
Even though I came first does that mean I get the 4th best HSC exam score?

Is my aligned mark the average of the 4th best HSC score (83) and my assessment mark (84)?

I think you are referring to the moderating process, not the aligning process.

The moderating process takes into account the lowest examination mark, the mean of the examination marks, and the highest examation mark that were attained at your school. We would need to know these score in order to properly judge your Assessment Mark.

(Just do your best :).)

If you are talking about aligning, and the marks you refer to are total weighted marks, I am afraid that no-one will be able to help you: comparisons between raw marks and aligned marks are determined by judges with reference to the specific examination (of which we, of course, are not aware).
