what's everyones opinions, was Alexander really so great?

he had the whole empire thing going, and in terms of the military he knew what he was doing, but he also made some really poor administrative choices and his dream of a combined Macedonain/Persian culture was a bit too unrealistic

he was really crap
he should of made sure he had an heir and then we wouldn't have had to do the ptolemaic and seleucid empires

but the ptolemies were pretty cool too,

by the way, Alexander did have an heir, Roxane gave birth to a boy soon after Alexander died, but the kid and Roxane were both killed

no, not hence NO HEIR, he left an heir, the heir just didn't survive. just because someone dies doesn't mean they never existed.

and even if you don't want to include the son, when he was dying he said that he wanted his heir to be the most worthy, hence he left one anyway, even if he didn't specify who it was

narrator, yet again, pointless arguments get nowhere, it is yet another unsolved history mystery (ooh that rhymes), I believe with a belief of his own indestructability, it was only time that stood in the way of his inevitable destruction, or that of his empire

Johnny G, that makes no sense, time would not have been a factor if he was careful to consolidate and impose better structure, but i guess he did die unexpectadly

As a general, you really can't fault Alexander. 11 years without losing one battle, that's pretty damn good. As a leader and administrator, well that's up for debate, depending on the historians you use. I personally think Alexander had the potential to become a DECENT administrator, but he bit the big one too early in his life.
