so my school is VERY picky with who does what level of maths, and bc last yr i got constant 90s for 5.3 math i was placed into ext 1 math (notice the placed and not chose? yes the math staffroom does that)

at first i thought ext 1 math to be VERY hard like i was expecting the absolute worst bc our 25 ext 1 math cohort all dropped due to difficulty (only 2 from originally 14 students remain and they are accelerated - one tried dropping but was refused) so i went tutoring (which i hated) for term 1 and did ext 1 work independantly from both tutoring and homework to stay on top of things

leading to my first AT1 (which was purely combs and perms) i found that all past questions and textbook questions 'easy', i wasnt sturggling, stuck or crying like i thought i would (this excludes the pigeonhole principle 💔)
all the questions i was doing were right and ironically i found advanced VERY EASY like omg (i said ironically bc i thought adv was my level)

so i was thinking of doing extension 2 math but was a bit nervous since as i said my school is very picky
they said 'constant 90s in math advanced is the standard to get into extension 2 maths'; the problem? i got an 83% on my adv AT1 and probably got 70% on my AT2 (im praying for an 80)

so yesterday i got my reports (just took a whole ass term) and immediately went to math and saw that i have achieved:
math advancedassessment mark: =89/100course rank: =2/24grade: A [only 4 achieved this]
math extensionassessment mark: =79/100course rank: 3/13grade: B [only 1 for A, 5 for B]
the equal in front of the numbers mean 'equal rank/mark' so other people achieved this

also yesterday was the parent teacher night and my teacher voiced her concern with me doing ext 2 maths bc its 'too time consuming, theres gonna be days where you do nothing but math and since at this school you're not allowed to drop adv math till trials, you'll have to do adv, ext 1 and ext 2, bearing in mind that if you fail an advanced assessment you'll be forced to drop ext 2 even if you're doing good in it'

this lowkey exhausted me from just listening LIKE 3 MATHS COME ON BROOOOOOO
my mum is against me doing ext 2 math constantly saying that 'its too hard'
another problem i have is that im doing absolute shit in physics i got a 42/100, rank 10/12 and grade D [3 people got an A]

so im 100% dropping physics at the end of year 11 which my mum is also against

anyways too much yap but i just wanted to give context
ultimately i want to inquire about the following:
1. Is it really too much work? minimum how many hours does everyone do (just for ext 2)?
2. Does anyone's school also force them to do all three math levels? If so how did you manage?
3. Is dropping physics negatively impacting me? [please dont say yes bc i really want to drop it 😭🙏]
4. Is it too early to decide now?
5. Should I just do what my mum tells me? Keep physics and don't do extension 2?
6. My school also does not include extension subjects with the timetable so I'll have to attend early class 4 times a week (2 for ext 1, 2 for ext 2), the thing is they start at 7:30AM and to get there on time I usually wake up at 5:30AM [they do this bc as i said we aren't allowed to drop advanced]
7. [not a question] I WILL be dropping extension 1 if I don't proceed with extension 2 because despite that I find it 'easy' I feel like putting in extra work for one unit that won't count towards my ATAR and makes me wake up at 5:30 to get to class on time is not worth it

I KNOW ITS A LOT OF YAP BUT PLZ HELP ME OUT 🙏🙏🙏🙏

use math in focus to learn the content + quit tutoring. Also ur school sucks. 7:30 start time, are they that out of touch with society? why the fuck does your school choose your subjects? It's too late to get the fuck out of your fuckass shit school. Sorry for your loss and consequently lower atar.

Schools that make their own shitty rules and control their students excessively deserve to fail

i already quitted tutoring at the end of term 1 (thank god), also yh i dont know why they start at 7:30 like it pisses me off so much
i was meant to change schools but i never did bc it was way too far from where i lived
also no my school dont choose our subjects only the math faculty chooses who does which math due to our low band 6 rates (recently our highest band 6s were coming from maths so they want to keep it that way)

it might have to do with my school being partially selective, they only want the selective kids doing math adv and higher thats why
[we have 81 kids doing standard 2]

My school also runs math ext at 7:30 and it’s because it’s the only time when the accel kids can also join the class cause if they put it in the day it will run at the same time as other subjects

Was doing after school not an option? Like who the fuck wants to wake up at 5 am everyday. Fuck accel kids they can go fuck themselves for forcing everyone to attend at a ridiculous time. Why can't they just accelerate stupid fucking english instead? Like I'm so happy I don't have to do english anymore cause I did it last year so I can actually focus on math ext 1 and 2 and just chemistry. Btw who the fuck actually accelerates math extension 1 and 2? Like what the fuck is the benefit of it? With just advanced accel atleast you can experience the hsc with math and also learn extension 1 content faster cause u've already covered it

People who accelerate maths extension 1 and 2 are actually retarded. You're telling me you want to do just shitty writing subjects for the entirety of your final year in high school?

what time do most extension classes start at? ee1 starts at 7:50 for me, so I only have to be up by 6:30... how much earlier does it go?
all extension subjects (history, english, music etc) at my school start at 7:45 except math starts at 7:30
since there are only two trains that i can get before i reach school at 7:30 i wake up at 5:30, normal school days start at 8:45 and i wake up at 7
i dont live very far from school its just that 7:30 is extremely unsutaible for me but the teacher says that 'those 15min make a difference'

1. nah i'd say the workload is comparable to that of advanced and it's... almost too manageable for me?? (i probably do less work than i did in advanced) (and there's a decent amount of overlap between x1, adv and x2 content)
2. our school just assumes u know the adv content and i alr did adv last year soo yeah cant relate
3. nah (although there's basically a whole topic of physics in x2, but it's a very different flavour to that of hsc physics)
4. maybe? it's good to think about it but don't commit yet?

it's always better to pick something up and drop it later than not take it and regret it... and i enjoy x2 quite a lot! (especially mechanics and vectors but maybe that's just cuz i like physics...) sooo yeahhhhhh that's my take gl with ur decision and math and stuff :thrust:

I reckon you should take E2 if you are truly passionate about maths. My school never forced me pass adv and my teacher just let me do E1/E2 work on my own in the back (cuz im on 10 units so not like I can drop E2 anyways), but I was able to easily pass adv without ever studying for it (I reckon any above average E2 student could easily clear adv with minimal study). Regarding physics, I dropped it at the start of yr12. Compared to physics students, I found E1 vectors and projectile motion a bit more challenging, but it was manageable. Also from what ive heard from the physics kids, E2 mechanics is far beyond the motion they learn in physics so its basically an even playing field. Personally i spend about maybe 1.5hr every 2 days on E2, but it greatly ramps up leading to an exam, and so far ive been able to stay on top of everything and my ranks pretty good. If you do E2 just make sure to never fall behind because the pace is really fast and if you have any gaps you're gonna be stressing before trials. Also 5:30 wakeup is seriously cursed lol your gonna be sleep deprived.

1. an hour a day is prob fine. just make sure u don't chicken out and only do easy qns all year
2. yeh i think that's normal for yr12s (tho didn't affect me cuz accel), you don;t have to do hsc for 2u anyway
3. no offence given ur current performance, u might be cooked for physics
4. kinda
5. that's your choice
6. that's cooked, unlucky
7. extension 1 only doesn't count towards your atar if you do really bad in it (like outside best 8 non english), since ATAR is by best 8 + 2english units, not by subjects. Might not convince you to not drop but you should at least know how it works before making a decision currently based on a misunderstanding of it.

1. Yes it can take up a big chunk of your study time, but I don’t like to assign a set amount of hours bc it’s really different for everyone
2. Yes, I just slacked off and caught up on sleep, the assignments I found really easy even with barely and study (I’m talking like max an hour the night before). Your school is so petty for making you keep up your adv marks. I was playing maths trivia with the advanced class the other day cause the teacher lets me sit in and i swear I had no clue what half the terms were cause I slacked so much (tbf it was stats)
3. Depends completely on what you’re trying to do in uni, and whether you ENJOY the subject, cause not to sugarcoat it, year 12 doesn’t get any easier. If you enjoy it then it’s definitely possible to pick your game up
4. Idk don’t rush the decision and remember you can always drop later
5. If you have a passion for maths then consider it esp if ext 1 is easy, cause it’s not like your physics mark is guaranteed to go up like it’s a pretty hard subject, just leave as many options open as possible until you know it’s definitely not for you
6. Yup I had it rough as well up to 4 7:30 am classes a week and my teacher was away the entire later half of the year so we had subs
7. I feel like it’s a bit of a shame that you drop the extra unit if you’re doing so well but I’m not in your situation so make the choice that is most optimal for you

Ikr I’m an idiot I shouldn’t have accelerated now I barely get to use my calculator compared to if I still had maths😭😭😭

Idk but it’s stupid cause Eng ext runs during school but they put it on the same line as SOR 1 and since SOR is compulsory at my school these kids are forced to pick SOR 2 which is so stupid. But accel English would horrid tbh cause English without accel is already hard so doing it accel would be even worse. And at least at my school our cohort is already doing mid so if they put all the good kids in accel then our non accel cohort would do trash

bro if ur rank 2 who else are they gonna let into e2 like lowk but anyways heres my 2 cents

1. Is it really too much work? minimum how many hours does everyone do (just for ext 2)?
its not like a crazy crazy amount of work but def a significant amoutn of work
2. Does anyone's school also force them to do all three math levels? If so how did you manage?
i did accelerated math so i only have to do e1 and e2, but theres other people in my class who do all 3, and i think they manage just fine (one of them is like rank 1 in adv). i also know of people who literally dont try in adv at all because it doesnt actually count towards your hsc when you do e2 and they get like an e4 in ext2 despite being in the bottom of the class for adv.
3. Is dropping physics negatively impacting me? [please dont say yes bc i really want to drop it 😭🙏]
if u dont like it and wanna drop it just do it. when i dropped physics i felt like i was released from shackles (no diss)
4. Is it too early to decide now? 5. Should I just do what my mum tells me? Keep physics and don't do extension 2?
maybe wait it out and take e2 and try it and then u can pick which one u wanna drop
6. My school also does not include extension subjects with the timetable so I'll have to attend early class 4 times a week (2 for ext 1, 2 for ext 2), the thing is they start at 7:30AM and to get there on time I usually wake up at 5:30AM [they do this bc as i said we aren't allowed to drop advanced]
same... im late almost every morning but like if youre a morning person it'll probably be fine
