Welcome all computer minded... to the point!

I am about to have ADSL installed in my house and i have 4 computers. i want to hook these 4 computers up to the ADSL, i have already a Hub and the cabling. Also on one of my computers i have 2 network cards (NIC).

So do i need to buy a Router or can my computer with 2 NIC's share the internet connection into the hub and the other computers feed off the HUB??

Also how hard is these two systems to set up?? I have no had alot of networking experience... only linked a few computers around a hub before.

Thanx in advanced for everyones help!!!

The hub itself doesn't share the internet connection for you - you need a router for that kind of thing. The hub simply connects the computers together.

If you want to share the net, you can:

1) get a router (simple solution, probably more expensive)
2) Turn on Window's own Internet Connection Sharing function. The computer that the modem is connected to will need to be connected to switched on for the other computers to access the net.

Never tried, but can't see why not - it should only be a matter of duplicating the network settings that are in your other computers....unless ICS does something weird/windows-proprietary.

yeah, MAC has it's own network settings, somewhere in the system folder.

all you have to do is type in the same stuff you ahve typed in for the windows IP settings. (except the actual IP ofcourse)

Gateway, DNS, Subnet Mask

The IP address of the ADSL modem is assigned by the ISP when you log on.

if you have win2k/XP
Start > run > type in 'cmd'

if you have 9x
Start > run > type in 'command'

once your black box opens, it'll give you:
C:\> or C:\Documents and Settings\...\>

type in [tracert www.boredofstudies.org]
*note, everything between and not including the [ ]

should give you a list

ICS
- To Windows
Follow the Prompts.

- To Mac OS
Open your System Preferences.
Create an Ethernet account (if no networking is setup)
Set the GATEWAY to the IP Address of the Windows Machine with ICS enabled.

To Find the IP Address
- For NT/XP/2000
Start > Run > CMD
- For 9X/ME
Start > Run > COMMAND
THEN
ipconfig

Get the IP address. Make sure the SUBNET MASKS ARE THE SAME, otherwise your network will not function correctly.

This is the method I have previously used to setup networks with ICS.

Hope this helps.

ipconfig /all
:p

btw, is that setting up networks with Win as host and Mac as client?

setting up Mac on network is pretty simple if you have all the details
