could someone briefly explain how the AC motors work (Ive got a really dodgy teacher who didnt explain it properly)

do u mean ac motors or ac induction motors?

AC motors are similar to DC motors except they use slip rings rather than a split ring commutator.
AC induction motors: current in the stator induces a current in the rotor, causing the rotor to spin, or chase the magnetic field in the stator.

So we don't need to know about the universal motor? What is it?
Also, how does the magnetic field in the stator move (so that the rotor can chase it) if it does not move?

The magnet doesn't normally move but a series of magnets are switched on and off effectively moving it.

Universal motor is a DC motor with the electromagnets and the coil hooked up in series, then when the AC current flips all flip keeping it in the same direction.
