Hey,

My bro has suggested to me a few ways that I can minimise my workload over year 12... He says that because you only need 10 units for a UAI and Ext 1 & 2 English makes each worth 2 units for UAI purposes, I could do

English Advanced
English Extension
English Extension 2
Mathematics
Chemistry

and get a UAI... But not HSC. Is this true? I don't want to do it because I want a HSC, but for the sake of the technicality, is he right? Can you do 8 units with 2 same-subject extension courses and get a UAI?

First off... when you're doing english extension 2, its worth 4 units.
Every extension in english is not worth 2 extra units (if thats what you're confused about)
About the UAI thing, from memery, you can only get a UAI if you do 10 units or more
and you are enrolled in 4 or more board endorsed courses.
With these subjects, you're only in 3 since english is considered one course.

English Advanced- 2 units
English Extension- 1 unit
English Extension 2- 1 unit
Mathematics- 2 units
Chemistry- 2 units

Total=8 units. therefore you wont be able to get a uai.
you have to have more units, if you wish to get a uai.

This is only true for mathematics - not for english.

Yes, it's one of the few unjust aspects of the system.
