So ive been in the gifted and talented english class since year 7 and since im in year 10 now we are going through the subject selection process, now my marks this year have been quite bad, around a 60% average and my teacher has recommended me standard english. I always thought I would be good enough and have always wanted to do extension 1 english or at least advanced, and I know I can do it, its just that there has been a shift in the style of writing and content they are looking for in our work and I am having a hard time adjusting to it. Basically we were taught english differently up till now and im so used to it that its causing my marks to drop a bit. I know that advanced english onwards its more of a discussion in contrast to standard english which is like a lecture, and I have recently, since midway term 2 started contributing a decent amount to class discussions. We still have 1 test left so im hoping i can have reasonable improvement and get recommended for advanced since I contribute in class a lot now as well, but in case I dont is there a way for me to go against my teachers recommendation and at least try advanced and extension english and then I can drop it if I really am bad at it? Im pretty sure i just have a hard time understanding what my teacher is looking for in our work and I have started asking him for more and more feedback so i can improve this assessment and i know i have the worth ethic to do advanced or extension. Thanks!

- It's statistically nearly impossible to get a band 5 or 6 in standard.
- despite that, a mark in English advanced is always better than the same mark in standard. Despite being harder to attain a band 5 in english standard, it's still worth the same or slightly worse as a band 5 in advanced
- This is due to the alignment process, as illustrated in the above distribution. That is, the mean has been adjusted to be 75 in standard while the mean in advanced has been adjusted to be 85.
- Even if you marks in standard improve to like 65%, because of the alignment process, your HSC mark will likely be a band 4. Meanwhile if you marks in Advanced was like a 55%, your HSC mark will still be a band 4

sorry for a bit of a short response, but there is a lot of text there 😅
will your school allow you to choose? if so, i'd probably pick advanced if i was you. I'd wait for some more opinions, though :)

hope this helps,

it depends on your school for the most part... I don't know of many schools in general restricting levels of advanced courses but if you go to a public or most private schools i think you should be given the choice... I can't vouch at all for selective schools though 🤷‍♀️

if you're commited, and think you can "bring your grades up" for next year, I see no reason you shouldn't do advanced, especially if that's what you'd had your heart set on.

I've read through your response more closely, and especially that line where you mentioned engaging the teacher for feedback? That's a very positive step, 👍 ...

Extension 1 may be a different case, or maybe not. It's much easier to drop an extension subject than a normal one (apparently), so that's something to keep in mind if you are given the choice

if ur struggling with english u shouldnt do extension 1 plus extension 1 is one of the worst scaling subjects, scaling worse than standard or advanced english.

but no matter how bad you are at english, always do advanced and never drop to standard. Otherwise you will actually score worse in the HSC as shown in my previous message

yea i wanted to do atleast advanced, i always thought i would be good enough, only reason my marks dropped this year is because they want us to break out of that structural essay kind of thing and incorporate our own personal voice and opinions in our writing and i just cant figure out how i should approach it

not to distract from your actual question, but the sentiment of "breaking out of struture ... personal voice" is a really important point. I've been doing ee1 for 2+ terms now and the biggest distinction between me and the top student (out of 3) is their ability to write a cohesive essay without necessarily using a traditional essay structure... If you can try to figure that out, it will definitely come in handy in the later years 👍
