the reality is that the government revenue needs to come from somewhere and people will never ever vote for increases in tax (and will always want tax cuts). if we didn’t have a slight yearly increase in tax by not indexing it to inflation, taxes would pretty much never be able to be increased again without public outrage and every tax cut would permanently reduce the budget, meaning we’d get less and less services every time a tax cut was enacted.

As a relatively high income earner, I'm naturally going to advocate for lower income taxes and instead encourage taxes be levied in ways which don't penalise me for working harder/earning more.

Articles like the one linked to above provide some perspective from a pure income tax calculation, but let's not forget the other ways you get stung whether it be through Medicare levy, Div 293, (lack of) childcare subsidy, etc...
