enoilgam is right. I am a teacher and my year 8 (mostly 14 year olds) English classes complete 1-1.5 hours of homework for me per week. I sometimes adjust this based on what else is going on for my students (e.g. if it's Tuesday and they have a maths exam on Wednesday, I won't give them English...

If you have started the Standard course, you cannot move up to Advanced. You can only move down (i.e. from advanced to standard) This is the case in most high schools.

I did Advanced english and English Extension 1 for my HSC in 2004 and received band 6 in adv and E4 in ext. If this is satisfies you as being good at essays then my first question is where are you located?
