Trial marks are raw. HSC marks are aligned, and we never see the raw mark. It's just not useful or meaningful to compare raw marks to aligned marks.
The artificial cut-off inflation he is probably referring to is the HSC Plus scheme, where you get up to 5 bonus points. This makes it look like you need a higher UAI than you actually do.
This scheme doesn't apply to combined LLB programs, so the only way you can get in with a UAI lower than...

i put in less work for philosophy than i did for eng adv, eng ext1, economics, french cont, french ext and it gave me my highest scaled mark out of all my courses
Not true. One can get a HD by getting past essays, memorising them and regurgitating them in the exam.
Distinction Courses are bloody fantastic. Two units, great scaling, great marks, for less work than a typical 2-unit course!
