Hi all, I'm a Y11 who just finished their preliminary exams. I have seen many people try for Ext.2 math at my school and I was wondering if the scaling was so good that even if you get super bad [50%?] it would actually scale my marks up dramatically. However I have not been doing any tutoring for it at all in contrast to other people who have been doing it since start of Y11 so I am scared that I would get a very bad mark compared to my cohort.
For reference, I was planning to do 11units worth of subjects however I heard that 11 units was pretty awkward and 10 units was better, so I am now considering Ext.2 math.
Any help is appreciated as my subjects are getting finalised tomorrow.

a 54 scales up to an 80 which is INSANE so in terms of scaling 100% worth it
My advice is do not do it.

Yes, a lower raw mark in MX2 is going to correlate to a higher alligned mark. BUT. that doesn’t mean you can just scrape 50% without putting in the work. MX2 marks look 'lower' bc the exam / content is insanely insanely insanely hard and the cohort is very strong. If you go in underprepared, you’re not just risking a low mark, you’re risking being way below the mean, which will drag you down even with scaling. The reason people say it’s worth it is because if you genuinely put in the time (and it is a fuck tonne of time) and sit somewhere around average, it can boost your ATAR compared to doing an easier subject.

Saying that it's going to 'scale up your marks', isn't entirely accurate. Because you're assuming you're going to get the same marks in Ext2, that u are in Ext1. And although I didn't take either subjects,Ext2 truly is a beast. So you're marks will realistically be lower.

If you're doing well in MX1, and you are enjoying it, go for it. But I'd strongly advise against picking it purely for the scaling, because it's going to take up so much more time than you're anticipating. I had so many friends pick subjects for the scaling, and the majority of them dropped it because a) it was too hard. b) they had no passion for it, and thus couldn't force themselves to revise it constantly. and c) it was eating away at their other subjects

You don't need EXT2 (or ext1) subjects to do well. Some of the MX2 kids from my school didn't hit a 95, and some didn't hit 90.

ESPECIALLY if you're going to drop to 10 units. There's no turning back from that point. And if it's too hard / draining, you're going to be in a really shit situation

to get a 50% in math extension 2, you have to spend the same amount of time you spend studying to get a band 6 in math advanced. plus 4 units is always going to be better than 2
