Hi, I've had a pretty subpar last year and an even worse last four weeks (think voluntarily spending all of lunchtime in the school library kinda worse). After school is a complete unknown for me, so I was wondering: aside from getting a job and going to uni, what activities do people.. actually do? And how on earth do you make good friends outside of school's structured environment? Any advice would be much appreciated!

Hey, lol I've actually been wondering the same thing 😭 For me personally, I've made a list of things I wanna do/get involved in that just include my interests I didn't explore in my younger teenage years, and things I want to work on for my own self development. Here: sewing, pottery, learning languages, going hiking/ walks in nature, learning about topics that interest me through YouTube, articles and books (e.g. astronomy, historical periods, psych etc), going to theatre performances, museums, observatories, ideas for starting a small business, etc. I know these include doing things for your OWN self and may be individual activities, but I'm sure you can meet people in public libraries, on hikes, at any place you might be interested in (e.g. theatre). Sorry if it isn't much but honestly just put yourself out there. I know how hard it is since I'm a very awkward and quiet person, but you definitely will get the chance to speak to people randomly so please take it! If your uni has any clubs, social/networking events join them. :)

thank you for the help!! I live in a regional area so there's not a lot around unfortunately, but hikes I can absolutely do. And starting a list is a wonderful idea, I wish you luck with all your interests! :hug2:

You can do exactly the same stuff you did throughout high school, but you just have more time for it. Life doesn't change that much. Also, most people just maintain their high school friend group. However, it's very easy to make friends in uni if you actually go to events and meet people.

ive spent my free time joining as many societies as i can.
on my first day of uni i joined polynesian societies and veterinary associations. am i polynesian or a vet student? nooo but who cares. i met my best friend thru this way. shes not polynesian nor a vet student either 💀💀

i literally just got home from a badminton tournament with the adelaide chinese debating union, loved it so much. JUST GO FOR ITT and u get free food and merch <33

That's pretty similar to my experience. I joined the debating society because I liked high school debating, but I didn't really vibe with the people there. However, some friends got me to join the UN society, which I had no experience in, and I vibed with everyone much better. Imo it's more important to pick societies based on their vibes rather than their purpose, as they're more or less an excuse to make friends.
