it's safe if the question asks you

e.g. "To what extent does this statement relate to your own understanding of your prescribed text? In your response, refer to the quotation and to at least TWO poems."

Really? I've actually never read an essay that uses first person singular. Most i've come across just use "our".
yeah i've read plenty that say "our" but there are also exemplars that say "my understanding"

mod b is an exception for essays

i would obv never use first person for common or mod a but if the question specifically says "your understanding" idk why you can't respond with "my understanding"

It's like questions that ask "to what extent do you agree with this statement". You don't go saying "I agree to a significant extent"

It is counter-intuitive, true, but still no.

yeah, but the judgement has to be implicit through ur choice of words to build up sophistication - basically using 'our understanding...' like B1andB2 mentioned
my teacher said that using personal pronouns esp for adv essays is a big no

Say "shapes our perspectives on ___" which is similar to "shapes the contemporary audience's perspective on ___". Same same. Yes you can use "our" imo.

You can use "my" and "I" and I have read successful essays which do that, however I personally don't recommend it and I think you should opt for "our" "we" and "us" instead for that personal perspective which is required for a module B essay.

I'm not exactly sure what Mod B is like now since I did it in the old syllabus. However I got a 97 in advanced english and I used pronouns in the Mod B like my understanding. I also opposed some of the critic comments i included by giving my own opinion and specifying by saying something like 'However, in my interpretation'. Risky move on the part of the critics but I did it in a way that was justified and well written.

However in saying that just because you use personal pronouns or if you don't write them, it will have little impact on your mark. What you write is obviously your analysis and so even if you don't write my understanding it is clearly your interpretation and understanding of the text. So I wouldn't worry too much about that aspect, just do whatever you did in trials already and previous assessment tasks because you don't want to try make a change going into HSC if you don't know how to write it in that way
