Q20 should be A. Its a tricky question. You need to calculate 'y' which is 96, as the top half of the beam undergoes compressive stress. 'm' can be calculated by drawing up a basic SFD and BMD, which is 12kNm. Plug it into the bending stress formula, and it would be approximately 11.3MPa. The given area is useless information. Q10 answer:B would make some sense, as you'd average out the radii to get 16.5, which is the radius along the neutral axis. IDK about 14, I put down B for that.
the force acted on the beam after 3 metres, therefore BM is 8x3 = 24KNm. Therefore, compresive stress = 24000x0.096/102x10^-6 = 22588235Pa = 22.6 MPa. That was my answer, can u tell me how it's wrong

EDIT: argg, i forgot it was 4x3 = 12KNm, dammit should have made a diagram -.- you're right

I had no clue what i was writing for half the questions, and the ferries where the hell did they come from?

Isn't this question a lot like the HSC 2005 Q9? So would it be best to make y the length of the whole beam as maximum stress would occur at the ends?I got D in the end, any opinions?

3ddementor, i think this is the most correct. (y is the distance from neutral axis, so you definitely have got that wrong)

Sorry, I meant take y as the width of the beam from bottom to top (250mm or whatever it was) because that's how you generate the correct answer for the 2005 question :S

Anyone post up the paper? There's a few engineers I know of eager to look at it.

mate, the wealth of knowledge you need to know for engineering studies due to its crap and broad syllabus is not even worth it as it's scaling is abysmal (don't fall into the trap in saying "oh but it aligns well", well who gives a shit about aligning, at the end of the day if you want to go to uni, scaling is what matters). Never should you even think about going near this course (it was like Pandora's fucking box, i saw it was like "ewww it looks fun", but OH MY FUCKING GOD I WAS WRONG, BLOODY DEATH CAME OUT OF THE BOX, AND I HAD TO FREAKING LIVE WITH IT FOR A WHOLE YEAR), and please spread the word and save the countless generations of HSC students to come to avoid this shock horror of a subject. I even dropped bloody maths ext 2 for this shit, no doubt its up there with the greatest regrets in my life so far (what makes it worse math ext 2 is a godly scaling subject and i was ranked 2nd for math ext 1, stupid i know). HEED MY WARNING FUTURE HSC STUDENTS, NEVER AND I MEAN NEVER CHOOSE THIS SUBJECT OR EVEN THINK ABOUT DOING THIS SUBJECT, IF YOU CHOOSE TO IGNORE MY WARNING, IN ONE YEARS TIME DON'T COME BACK TO ME AND CRY YOUR BALLS OUT BECAUSE I ALREADY WARNED YOU. FOR THOSE WHO LISTENED, YOU CAN THANK ME IN ONE YEARS TIME WHEN YOU HEAR YOUR FRIENDS OR OTHER PEOPLE WHO HAVE FALLEN INTO LABYRINTH (AND YES THE ONE WITH THE FUCKING MINOTAUR) THAT IS ENGINEERING STUDIES. This is coming from a person who is ranked 1 in his school for engineering, so it's not from some dumbo whose to lazy to do anything in engineering (the worse thing to do in this subject), so don't take my opinion lightly. Well good luck for current engineering studies students for results and the suckers who are doing it for 2015 (if you have the option, drop it immediately or swap it with another subject pronto).

well for me, my other subs are good enough to get the atar i want and i'm glad i did the subject because it is extremely interesting. but hands down you're right, the subject is ridiculously difficult for what you actually get out of it

but maths ext 2 is my life. I would have never imagine myself dropping it. If I can't get expected results in mx2, then I will feel shit. I really am not worried much about scaling cos I can't get it med so what's the point of a 99.4? The thing is that engineering blood runs in my veins. And if I can't get into med, I go aerospace engineering. Its really not about content or syllabus. It's a matter of if wanting to learn it. Although if there is bullshit like ethics or societal development in history and all that history stuff then it's better I didn't do it.

there is that stuff but it's not in the exams
i feel ya man, i'm not lookin for med either (mainly because i don't want it at all), mx2 is my life as well :p i'm going to do electrical next year and i did enjoy engineering studies a lot.

Hahha yeh bro. Even mx1 is enjoyable but mx2 packs mechanics--interesting. Mx1 packs too much prob and circle geo--- pain.
