The exam period between universities is usually different.

As it stands, the exam period at USYD this year:

Sem 1: 18 June - 30 June
Sem 2: 12 November - 24 November

ah okay.. not sure what university yet lol.
either unsw or uws.

But i'm planning on taking a 3day holiday over early May, and wondering if this would effect me heavily in terms of learning etc.. I'm aiming for a D/HD average.

I would side to saying no. I've known a lot of university students choose not go to lectures and tutes and still either pass and if they are naturally intelligent, then they do rather well. Besides, you're most likely to only miss a tute and a few lectures which you should be able to catch up on if the lecturer as posted up lecture notes on your university's eLearning site.

If you have a modicum of motivation and work ethic, a 3 day holiday won't affect you at all.
