I think it is absolutely frakking stupid that it said "ONE" because the syllabus says you need 2 supplementry texts.
I wrote 2 anyway. The douches can read it, and not mark it. I answered the question though, and I hope that they reflect one the vast number of people that wrote about 2.
I am going to jump and get those notes when they're on the board of studies and see if it's mentioned.
it's funny how people are arguing that it's part of the syllabus... yes wherever you find it in the syllabus they may say that you must have related text even 2 for that amount but i sincerely doubt the syllabus stated you must have 2 in your exam because it clearly said one.
As for losing marks - MAYBE - why? because MAYBE the marker might decide to not read your second related text which might cause a lack of cohesiveness in your response resulting in a lower mark</SPAN>

i think they'll possibly just overlook the other related text and just mark the first one mentioned in the introduction. i'd imagine a maximum of 2 marks could be taken off for that.

to all the people who say 'but everyone memorises their essays': part of the point of HSC english is to develop the skills to write essays on the spot. that is part of what is being assessed. if you haven't developed that skill, that's your problem. the markers won't sympathise with you just because you didn't read the question properly.
you had 10 minutes reading time, and it was clearly stated IN CAPITALS to refer to only ONE related text. yes, everyone was under pressure and yes, it was most peoples' first exam, but that's irrelevant. they ask a question, you answer it. they don't take anything other than your answer into consideration.
that's the HSC. that's life.
get over it and focus on the rest of your exams instead of worrying about what you can't change.
yeah, i even used 2 related texts and i agree with you. can't change it now so moveeeeeee onnnnnnnnnnnnnn

hmmm....

all my teachers said that they will be rather lenient in terms of marking. if 1/3 of people did this, I reckon they will just overlook the issue.
I'm sorry but that is the most unfair thing I have ever heard.
So you're saying that me and some one who didn't even read the question properly are likely to get the same mark when I worked my ass of in the exam trying to think of techniques for my supplementary just to fill up the book?

WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP

GG people who didn't even read the question

Now, i want to get this straight . Those that wrote 2 KNOWING that they need to write just one...should end up losing marks. It is absolutely unacceptable to add in impertinent information especially when the writer KNOWS what he is writing is irrelevant.

Im pretty sure no one actually read AT LEAST ...im a 100% sure not a single person actually thought it was at least cause there are 3 questions and ud be a complete moron to not read every question thoroughly.

I myself found it hard to extend the related text and will therefore lose around 3-4 marks for sure. My teacher also did mention that those who wrote 2 will end up losing marks cause ...they specified ONE in capitals--like someone above has stated.

I only used 1 text, but had to try and use the themes from my second text to correspond with my first. I think i did it alright. Comprehension not the best, but creative pretty good.
I rekon that if you used two tests, they will just disregard what you wrote for the second text, however still read the core work until you mention the second text.
Was so lame but, why wouldn't it say at least one....

to be very honest.. i think it's only fair you get deducted marks if u do more than one because:

1) even though i had a memorised essay with 3 related texts, I managed to write a really shit roughly 800 word essay and its not fair that someone who writes on 2 with a lot less depth gets more marks than me
2) you completely ignored the question and showed u depend purely on memory...the question probably was very purposely worded that way to break the memory habit

sorry but i think its only fair :/

I don't think that's fair at all! I can understand if the additional second text is not marked, but if they deduct marks for misreading the question than that is not right. Anyway, I answered the question about 'understanding' but accidently misread the part saying ONE text, so you can't say I wrote purely from memory. I just used more than one text.

The question was evidently designed to sort between those who could write an essay on the spot, and had true depth of knowledge of both their prescribed and related texts, those who could therefore extend their work and rely on more than memorising.
Or the people that can't write an essay on the spot and had one prepared, just left out their extra chosen texts.

We still wrote ONE. We just wrote another for good measure :p
The question didn't say "only one" therefore we still fulfilled the requirements :)
I think they'll only consider the first, disregard the second and we lose marks by wasting time.
Well if you wrote one and another for "good measure", that doesn't equal one.

i honestly wonder if previous years were as much whingers about the hsc as 09ers were.

qq'ing about not being told it could be one text.

WHOS FAULT YOU HAD A PREPARED ESSAY?
WHOS FAULT YOU CAN'T READ?

OH YEAH, yours and yours alone.
honestly tommykins, there has been more change in 2009 to the overall HSC then there has been in its history tbh!

There's no need for all this hate. I do feel sorry for those who mistakenly wrote about two, but since it's already done and we don't ever get to see our raw exam marks anyway, there is really no point of people getting so worked up about it. Obviously those who wrote one related think it's only fair that those who wrote two lose marks, and those who wrote two don't think it's fair they lose marks.

It's just one section of one exam (or half actually), and I'm sure that you'll get the ATAR you deserve in the end.

Only a few people from my school wrote on two texts, we are encouraged to not have a prepared essay and take each question as a new question. i guess that helped us :)

in regards to being marked down i think it would be more fair if they did mark you down for two pieces of related material, but i highly doubt they will and will jsut ignore the 2nd one....

Actually, my English teacher is a HSC marker and has been for the last 3 or so years, and he said while no EXTRA marks are given, the marker will still read your extra related materials because it shows them more of you writing capabilities.
So technically no marks are given, but it shows the marker that you're a competent writer which earns you brownie points, and possibly takes your mark one or two points, which is enough to change your overall band.
And really, having two related texts is not much to ask.

They won't include the second additional text in the marking, but they won't deduct marks for including it. Which means that people who wrote more on ONE text will get better marked if they wrote more about their one addition text, than someone who wrote less, and then wrote about another one.
I wrote about two additional texts, but I didn't do it on purpose. I just didn't read the question properly (stupid, I know).

i did the same thing. i admit, i didn't read the question properly. but i don't think people who wrote more than one text will get better marked. they will read your prescribed text and related text and if you have sufficient info on your prescribed text then they will count it with ONE related text. seriously, the question said one, so they will only count one. This may benefit or hinder the overall response. but fuck who cares ay we'll never know
