Ok so the deal is, im currently enrolled in MATH1004 and am doing a BSc (Adv).
However, ive looked on the timetable thing for this unit in conjunction with all my other units and it causes a major major clash like 50 times lol.

if i was to do MATH1005, it would cause no clashes.
the problem is i dont know which one to actually do.
i know MATH1005 has probability in it and that was probably my worst topic at school lol i hated it...although i have read somewhere that this course is recommended for life science students (cant remember exactly what but it applied to me)
ive done ext 1 maths and got 47/50 for it in hsc so doing MATH1004 isnt a problem difficulty wise

so iyo wat do u think i should pick???

well im not sure which one you should do. but maybe if its going to cause clashes choose the other one?? not sure tho

oi when you got your enrollment sheet in the mail, did it say that your course was bs. science and the stream was advanced? or did it say that your course was bachelor of science (advanced)??
thanks
(sorry to hijack this thread)

MATH1005 is not that challenging, so dont worry. Better off picking something you can attend like MATH1005.
It is really boring though, and you probably will end up not turning up anyway. Having said that, having some stats knowledge is always useful in a science degree.

why dont you wait until you get your official timetable?
its quite rare to get clashes in first year sci with maths, because pretty much everyone has to take maths, so they put on enough lectures and tutes to fit everyone in comfortably.

was that a question for me?

first year i did
Math1015 (and I dropped Math1013 or whatever it was)
Chem1001
Biol1001
Biol1005

Yeah your subjects are pretty standard 1st year science subjects, so you shouldn't have a problem with clashes

i know math 1005 is statistics but math 1004 is discrete maths- what does it teach students?

MATH1004 provides an introduction to fundamental aspects of discrete mathematics, which deals with 'things that come in chunks that can be counted'. It focuses on the enumeration of a set of numbers, viz. Catalan numbers. Topics include sets and functions, counting principles, Boolean expressions, mathematical induction, generating functions and linear recurrence relations, graphs and trees.

MATH1005 offers a comprehensive introduction to data analysis, probability, sampling, and inference including t-tests, confidence intervals and chi-squared goodness of fit tests.

thank you.:)

i'm doin in the first semester
MATH1901
MATH1902
CHEM1901
PHYS1001 (thinking of changing to PHYS1901)
PSYC1001
and in 2nd sem:
MATH1903
MATH1905
CHEM1902
PHYS1003 (thinking of changing to PHYS1902)
PYSC1002

you're not doing very many advanced subjects for the advanced degree?
why is it you"re not doing adv maths?

i know if you did maths ext 2, you get into the adv course as it is the course requirement, and that person maybe didn't get into the adv units coz didn't do maths ext 2??

Actually, week 1. And all that changes is you do labs on Friday afternoon instead of the other times.

Depends on what area of applied. Technically neither, since discrete is firmly stacked to the pure side, and stats is stats. The latter might have some benefit in later years (it helps a bit but is not absolutely essential background knowledge for financial maths).

i didnt do 4u math at school. i know only 12 or 18 CP seems small but there isnt a minimum or maximum for advanced units in first year, so im waiting to just get first yr over and done with and then do all my chem subs in 2nd and 3rd yr at advanced level.

so basically we will be in the same chem lectures i think

did u also get invited to TSP???

to tell u the truth this whole TSP thing is confusing me to hell.

when the fuck can i change to CHEM1903 and CHEM1904??? no bullshit when?

In my opinion, MATH1005 was absolutely the worst subject I took in first year. Statistics really didn't catch my interest at all, and the mundane lecturers didn't help. Just before semester began I switched from MATH1004 to MATH1005, and it is a decision which I regret.
