This just further devalues a profession which already has a huge marketability problem. I've always had an inkling that USyd is only interested in churning out an army of lawyers and businessmen. How noble.

argubly i fink you all cant really do much about it, it is sincerely the university's decision to rule it out.

You will still be affected to a certain degree IMO. The working staff heir might not work as hard for you as they would of if they never heard of the news. Are you an 03'er? If so that makes it worse because you will be the last cohort to go through the USYD Nursing course. They might not really care. (Just guessing though. :p TOUCHWOOD)

This issue sure is abit of a bummer. For anyone that WAS thinking about getting into nursing, i would recommend taking a look at the courses offered at Usyd-Health sciences campus.
I take it those who wanted to do nursing where in it for the *joyz* of looking after and helping people, in a sicence related discipline......well, courses like radiationtherapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology even physiotherapy ;) all seem like viable options for those nursing hopefulls.

Yeah, its basic economic theory at play..
this decision is socially inefficient (less places for nursing - a badly needed profession right now), yet is economically viable

fuck i hate that rationale - because its 'economically viable'
we'll see in 20 years time when there is a health services catastrophy and we'll see how effective the services will be then

I think that was the intention, there's a quote from the government somwhere that basically says that encouraging uni's to specialise is the entire rationale behind the policy changes.

If every uni specialises, won't it be bad for professions because everyone will be trained at the same place and hence there will be less different thinking about how things are carried out? If that makes any sense.

E.g. if all nurses are trained at UTS, they will all be taught the same way of carrying out the job. The entire workforce will have one way of working and one way of thinking and will that improve patient care if there is only "one way" of doing things? I don't think so...

I hope that makes sense...

also less competition in seeing who can out do the other uni's which means crappier curriculums
