Okay umm just a question in regards to the reasons for why the stalemate occurred on the Western Front..

I just wanna knw if theres anything other than the following to talk about:

1. Failure of the Schlieffen Plan
2. Freanch counter-attack (Battle of the Marne)
3. Race to the sea: Failure to outflank the enemy ie digging of the trenches
4. Failure of the German offensive at Ypres.

  • their weapons and tactics weren't advanced enough e.g. they still walked into battle like the Romans did, still using horses
  • Plan XVII failed
  • They planned an offensive war and it turned out to be defensive
  • It was a war of attrition
  • Neither side could get a decisive breakthrough, advances were measured in metres not kilometres and what land was gained was usually lost again because they didn't take advantage of their gains

Jenni is pretty much right. Technolgy (ie machineguns, gas) was the primary reason. The flanking attempt ie race to the sea, created a huge front basically limiting the attacks to frontal moves. The lack of mobility due to weather and lack of trnsportation (trains and motorised) added to the stalemate.
