Hey guys,

I'm hoping to go into high school teaching and would like to teach english, history and society and culture. I've been looking around at the various degrees and options and I've noticed that some specify that they set you up to become a society and culture teacher (eg. Newcastle and UNSW) and others don't list it such as USYD. I'm just wondering if anyone knows how one goes about being able to teach Society and Culture... I thought maybe you don't have to specifically be "qualified" as such in the subject to know how to teach it, however I was speaking to the head teacher of history at our school who is trying to find a replacement for a teacher who just left (who taught history and society and culture) and he said that he is only looking to hire someone qualified in both subjects. So if anyone can shed some light on how this works, whether it is a separate qualification some people go about after their degree or whether I should only be looking at Uni's that specialise in the subject in order to be as employable as possible when I am looking for jobs. Thanks so much :)

If I were you I would contact TeachNSW and ask them. You would need to do the teaching method but if you have subjects like cultural studies and sociology the Department may give you the code without having done the method.
