I have heard that if I want to be able to deal with next year in general, I will have to work on studying better. My school has decided to bring in a "study specialist" to help us with that as well.

It's almost the end of Term 3 and I feel too lazy to do work I am given and finishing off assignments at the last minute or so. While I mostly blame myself, I also give some of the blame for my bad study habits because my class is the "dumb" one. Not exactly special needs but we get the easy way through courses and as such, I barely get assigned work.

What do you guys think I should start doing to get myself to study? Alot of people say that I am not that stupid and that a little studying could benefit me heaps.

That is correct, Stage 6 is more complex than Stage 5 and therefore naturally requires more effort and improved study methods/techniques to effectively manage the workload and perform well in each subject. The study specialist initiative from your school seems beneficial. It would be a good idea to try and benefit as much as possible from this person's insight.

Since you still have term 4 left, you should not put yourself under pressure yet. Instead, you should work on improving your study habits throughout term 4 while also enjoying it as it will be the last term of year 10. You should not reduce your efforts even if your class/cohort is not academically capable. In year 12, half of your overall mark in a subject will come from your performance in a number of school-based assessment tasks and exams. Your performance in these will be used to determine your rank relative to your cohort, which will subsequently be used in determining the mark that contributes half of your overall mark (known as the Assessment Mark). The higher your rank, the higher your Assessment Mark will be, and this is the reason that you should still do your utmost even if you are not surrounded by academically capable students.

In addition to working on improving your study habits during the remainder of year 10, you may wish to have a look at the syllabus document of each subject that you are interested in taking in year 11. The syllabuses provide you with an indication of the content that you will learn in year 11 and year 12, allowing you to start developing a study strategy (which can be refined as you start and progress through year 11) early on. It is important to make clear study and break time allocations as well as regularly remind yourself of your goals (for and beyond the HSC) so that you can remain motivated to study.

I hope this helps! :D
