hii my subjects selection is due next week and I was just wondering for advice if I should choose ext 1 math. I really enjoy math as a subject and I am currently in 5.3 my grades are sitting at a low to high B right now. I do tutoring at ngo and sons rn and starting next month I will be doing 3u tutoring over there.

My subjects I have chosen rn are

eng adv, economic, maths adv, geography, SOR1, ext 1 math, Environmental and earth science

I would really appreciate hearing some advice from ppl who do ext 1 as many ppl in my school dont really do it as my school isn't ranked that high.

I'll preface this by saying I don't do Ext 1. However, I'm very close with several students in mx1 so I have a pretty good idea.
By the looks of it, it'd be a good decision to pick extension. My school has ~7 who do it and all were in 5.3 beforehand, so you've got that ticked off. I wouldn't worry about your grades, as long as your school allows you to pick it. Realistically you can learn ahead if you feel the need (i would strongly recommend, if you have time). Secondly, from what i've heard on here, ngo and sons will be super helpful for ext1, and if you're already planning to go, well...
I'd say pick it.

Also, 12 units is a fantastic choice. Not too high courseload, but with those extra units so you'll have some that don't count :) If you think you can handle it you could, but most students pick 12 for a reason haha...

hopefully this helps,

Go for mx1. It is a subject that is really easy to drop if you realise it’s not for you. If you’re doing tutoring you should be able to succeed in the course.

why would you not do extension 2? it's literally worthless with just advanced. Advanced scales pretty much the same as standard. And SOR, like other humanities, scales extremely poorly.

Not sure where you got that from. Advanced scales significantly better than standard. I'd say doing mx1 without doing mx2 is still worth it, as it is not as intense as a 2 unit course. You can grind out practise papers much quicker when it comes to exam time, as the tests are shorter and there's less content.

yup like who willingly does 12 units besides delusional people? there's no such thing as "a safe subject" if you're going for quantity over quality. There's literally no point in getting 75 in two subjects instead of 90 in one

go for it! the content really isn't too much harder than advanced and it scales great. also imo the content in ext is just much more interesting than advanced. i'm currently doing it and my school is similar to yours, there's only 7 people in my ext class and we're ranked around 150th. it can actually be an advantage since you have less competition; it's easier to secure that #1 spot for your internals. either way, you can always drop it if it's not for you so just give it a go :) good luck!

You can always choose it for year 11 and then decide what to do with it in year 12 based on how you would perform in year 11.

It does have good scaling but be prepared to make the additional effort as well due to its increased difficulty.
As in technically it is only worth 1 unit which is half a subject but realistically you probably wouldn't be spending 50% of time on maths extension 1 as you would on your other 2 units subjects.

I mean I don’t do ext but I have a friend doing accel adv now and she’s finding yr 11 ext quite challenging
