I'm accelerated and just got back my trials marks: 67/70 for ext 1 and 100/100 for adv. I wasn't planning on doing extension 2 because I would rather just do the bare minimum next year and ext 2 takes up HEAPS of time from what i've heard, but I'm kind of tempted to do it now because maybe I could do well in it? Would it be worth taking mx2 if it's just going to replace my adv mark?

For some more context:
  • I don't need ext 2 for uni
  • I enjoy math and would be motivated to work hard in ext 2
  • Not aiming for a super high atar
  • I'm doing kinda bad in sor 1 so I could drop down to studies in catholic thought and take up ext2 instead

You're already doing so well in math adv though... hm. Have you talked to your school counsellor about this?

See how you go in hsc, and then decide if you want to go through with it. Ex2 requires a whole brain reset, and according to my maths teacher who's a senior HSC marker, even the smartest ext 1 kids have difficulties getting a band 5.

yes I’d recommend it

it has much less content being a 1 year course and only 5 topics

it is different from mx1 in that a lot of concepts are completely new or serious step up

it’s rewarding if you enjoy maths and allows you to drop another subject

mx1 becomes 2 units meaning it gets double weighted in your atar

the only reason ur getting 100 may be due to the lack in difficulty for ur school exams. u might even only get a 93 exam mark at the end for math advanced which scales absolutely horrifically.

anyone can get an E3 lol. I don't get why hsc bands are separated like this for extension

very bad unless you get above 95. moreover, extension 1 and advanced are counted as 3 units. Meanwhile, extension 2 and extension 1 are counted as 4 units. So you get a higher contribution from 4u maths regardless if you aced math advanced and extension 1. Like even if you state rank math advanced and extension 1 that's pretty much useless since you WILL get a higher contribution with 4 units of extension 2 and extension 1 anyway.

Another possible scenario is you get a lower extension 2 scaled mark compared to advanced. Even if that's the case, you'd still be better off since it's counted as 4 units instead of 3, which is very hard to match in other even lower scaling subjects such as sciences, english and humanities.
