hi,
can someone answer these random queries for me?
1) how do you write the forumlas of fatty acids/esters? is it required for the syllabus? or do we just need to know how many carbons there are or soemthing?
2) what does "salt out" mean? by logic, it means to remove the salt but can someone please confirm this
3) what is the significance of this equation in the solvay process:
Na(+) + HCO3 (-) --> NaHCO3
thanks!!

1. there is no set number of carbons/length of fatty acid/ester molecule. at skool, we usually deal with triesters, etc
2. nope. u use salt to remove the soap through precipitation (water molecules rather bond with ions from salt)
3. the product is insoluble, which is later heated by steam:
2NaHCO3 --> Na2CO3 + CO2 + H2O

hope it helps
