Got a few questions... plz help me out:

1) Why can electrons in a gas atom only have discrete energy levels, while those in a solid state can have a range of energies?

2) Did de Broglie suggest that the electron could be thought of as an electromagnetic wave? Compare and contrast electromagnetic waves and de Broglian matter waves.

3) Describe the way that the de Broglian wavelength for a particle is dependent on the particle's mass and speed.

4) Discuss the role the photovoltaic cell is playing now, and is likely to play in the future.

1) electrons can only exist in discrete energy levels for gases and solids, however, banding forms when tatoms are located within close proximities and there are effectively many discrete energy levels over a very short space
2) de broglie suggested that all matter can be thought of as waves, he illustrated this by describing electrons as waves, and taking energy levels as where the waves are standing waves, it can be shown that the existence of discrete energy levels.
similarities - talk about hoe they both have the wave - matter duality
difference - mass, basically any clear difference u can think of between emr and matter
3)lamda = h/p = h/mv just describe the formula.. (detailed dissection in the textbook but all u really have to say is how their product are inversely proportional to the wavelength)
4) talk about finite sources of energy being rapidly consumed and depleted .
photovoltaic cell is a potential replacement that is much more environmentally friendly. as for current role, its arleady being applied 2 hot water systems, telephone booths etc... google stuff if u have 2 bad it should b in the text books esp. jacaranda
