Do you think illegally downloading music is ethical?

Yes or No: No

Please give reasons: It's basically stealing and the artists dont get any money from it, but if i bought a cd, the artist would get shit all profit anyway and most of it goes to the record label, so i don't really see a point in spending money on something which i can get for free.

Are you aware of the laws associated with music piracy?

Yes or No: Yes

What are you aware of?

In singapore where I live, if caught downloading copyrighted material, the fine can be up to $20,000 SGD and 5 strokes of the cane and also some gaol time. I'm away that in Australia the ISP will send a warning email stating the laws you have violated and the file you downloaded.

Do you think that music piracy is fair to the artist?

Yes or No: no

Do you think the public has the right to illegally obtain music?

Yes or No: no

Why or why not? Depends if the prices drop and its a more easier process to pay.

Do you think the music industry should do more to stop music piracy?

Yes or No: no

If yes, what do you think they can do?

What is you opinion/ view of music piracy?

Not a good thing, but me being a poor student with shitall money and who loves music, i see it was the best option for me.

That, yeah it is wrong and i shouldnt do it...but CD's are priced at really stupid prices. Like seriously... $30 for 12-18songs...hmmm yeah! And i may only like one or 2 songs on the cd...so i just dont think i should pay all that for one or 2 songs...and if i like more songs on the CD, or that particular artist, then i will buy the cd.
But people are enjoying the music, and the record ppl arent doing a whole lot more about it...so meh just go along with it all.

Yes or No: Yes

Do you own an mp3 player? Eg iPod

Yes or No: Yes

Do you think illegally downloading music is ethical?

Yes or No: No

Please give reasons:

As much as it rips off artists, CD's are too expensive to buy frequently or numourously (I have HEAPS of favourite artists). Plus, if i was ever to buy an album, i like to sample a couple of tracks before i buy the whole album. I have never downloaded a whole album. And i don't download up and coming artists that need support.. only the more popular bands that don't need my corporate dollars

Are you aware of the laws associated with music piracy?

Yes or No: Vaguely

What are you aware of?

That it rips off artists and is illegal

Do you think that music piracy is fair to the artist?

Yes or No: No, but as if they need the money anyway - they look pretty cashed up to me.

Do you think the public has the right to illegally obtain music?

Yes or No: Until they lower CD prices, yes.

If more legal music download sites were created would you use them?

Yes or No: Maybe

Why or why not?

Depends on the pricings.

Do you think the music industry should do more to stop music piracy?

Yes or No: Yes

If yes, what do you think they can do?

Lower CD prices

What is you opinion/ view of music piracy?

It's too widespread to control. I'll stop when i can afford to buy the music i want. And another thing. Some CD's have "Copy protection" and play distorted or not at all in some computer CD drives or after copying. I have an iPod, and when i upload it into itunes, it's still distorted and yuk. I wasn't doing anything illegal!

Thank you for your time

Yes

Have you ever downloaded a song from the internet legally? Eg using Bigpond

No

Do you own a cd burner?

Yes

Have you bought recordable cd’s and burnt your own cd’s or copied someone else’s cd’s?

Yes

If you download music, how many songs would you download a month?

16-20

How many cd’s would you buy a month?

0-2

Do you think cd’s are appropriately priced?

Yes

Do you think the latest technology which enables the ability to burn cd’s has effected how many cd’s you buy?

Yes

Do you own an mp3 player? Eg iPod

No

Do you think illegally downloading music is ethical?

Yes

Please give reasons:

I download the music and I wouldn't do anything that I didn't think was ethical. I don't have enough money to buy all the songs I want. And some songs, from overseas for example, aren't available in Australia and that's the only way you can get them. I think, for me, it's mostly a financial matter. It's just cheaper to do it this way otherwise I'd be severely broke.

Are you aware of the laws associated with music piracy?

Yes

What are you aware of?

You can't copy an actually CD. I think that in itself is illegal. Can't download music for free, there has to be some money invovled, I think this applies to file-sharing.

Do you think that music piracy is fair to the artist?

Probably not. Because they don't get the money that they should when their songs are downloaded (Sorry, am aware that this is a yes/no question...answer is no.)

Do you think the public has the right to illegally obtain music?

No. (they don't have the right, so to speak)

If more legal music download sites were created would you use them?

No

Why or why not?

They probably wouldn't be free.

Do you think the music industry should do more to stop music piracy?

Yes

If yes, what do you think they can do?

Lower the price of CDs

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is you opinion/ view of music piracy?

I think there's nothing wrong with it as long as you yourself get money off of it. As long as you use it for yourself only.

Do you think illegally downloading music is ethical?

Yes or No: yes

Please give reasons:

it would depend on your position within the industry though..
hm, well anything illegal would be inethical...
so, from this perspective, it is ethical because it's.. made available..? ha.

Are you aware of the laws associated with music piracy?

Yes or No: yes - vaguely.

What are you aware of?

shades of ipt -
as a consumer the rights associated with a music CD purchase only entitle you to listen to the content on it. only.

in some countries you face a possible jail term? (depending on amount of cds burnt) aaand, heavy fines..? there are some laws allowing raids of suspected 'pirates'.

Do you think that music piracy is fair to the artist?

Yes or No: no

Do you think the public has the right to illegally obtain music?

Yes or No: no

If more legal music download sites were created would you use them?

Yes or No: no

Why or why not?

cost. the knowledge that you are able to obtain the same item without pay. uh, security and the whole money transfer issue.

Do you think the music industry should do more to stop music piracy?

Yes or No: yes

If yes, what do you think they can do?

offer incentives? so-many cds bought equates to something..?
lower prices...?

What is you opinion/ view of music piracy?

beneficial to a user -- not so to a producer/artist
become part of 'every-day' life -- in some terms
