The individual lifestlyle approach came about in the early 70's, when the incidence of lifestyle diseases began to increase. This approach saw health as being the sole responsibility of the individual and thus health promotion was aimed at seeing behavioual changes in each individual. It believed knowledge was the key to health, which was very narrow view point. Besides, most people know what their unhealthy behaviours are doing to them, but don't care. eg smokers, consumers of high fat diets etc. This approach doesn't address the reasons for people adopting unhealthy behaviours and failed.

The New Public Health appproach on the other hand recognises the role of outside forces on the individual. eg living conditions, socioeconomic status and enviromental factors. It has developed over the last twenty years and focuses on creating oppotunities for people to engage in healthy behaviour, through policies, programs and other services. The main characterists of this approach are:
*empowerment of individuals
*Community participation
*Recognising the social determinants for health
Initiatives which have stemed from the new public health approach are the Ottawa Charter (1986) and the jackarta declaration (1996)

yeah basically individual approach is that you have total control over your health, but the new public health approach takes into account other external factors which can also influenece your health

Individual lifestyle approach:

-approach based around curative measures (lthis was a limited approach because the incidence of lifestyle diseases had increased)
-This approach was characterised by the notion that a reduction in the incidense if lifestyle-related diseases required health promotion aimed at individual behavioural change
-This approach implied that health was the sole responsibility of the individual and that illness was the result of poor individual decisions/behaviour
-This approach lead to "victim blaming" and failed to address the question of WHY people adopted unhealthy behaviour in the first place
- Knowledge was emphasised as the key to a healthy existence. but a knowledge based approach only works with people who are highly motivated to change
-This approach promoted an obsession with "healthism" - looking after personal health

New Pub. health approach:

- (Developed in the last 20 yrs or so)
-This approach acknowledges the roles played by living conditions (e.g. air, food, water) aswell as the social, economic and environmental factors that determine health status
-This approach places emphasis on establishing programs, policies and services that create opportunities to engage in health-enhancing behaviour
- This approach promotes reorientation of health services towards primary healthcare, based on the following principles:
1. reduction in health inequities
2. equitable access to appropriate health services
3. Creation of environments that promote good health, not bad health (e.g. shade provided at local swimming pools and parks)
4. Community participation in decision making related to health care
5. Focus on those who may be ill/at risk but do not seek treatment for whatever reason
6. Lasting solutions through implementation of a wide range of strategies addressing health issues, not a single, narrow focus
-This approach advocates cooperation of gov./community/health professional to promote health for whole population
