obviously year 11....

the main source of error is the open nature of the experimental set up of your colorimeter (this means that there is sufficient heat loss to the surroundings)... in industry, they are closed and work automatically, so that another error would be human error in parallax in reading from the thermometer etc

A good modification to the equipment is a draft shield.

A good modification to the method is to calibrate the equipment with a known, and use that data to approximately correct for the systematic error.

@04'er: u mean calorimeter??? @@

maybe u want to keep the volume constant, so that the energy is not used to do work...
so that you will have yourself a bomb (constant volume calorimeter)

-insulation
-not accounting the heat capacity of the beaker
-not covering it with lid
-distance between spirit burner and beaker not maintained constant
-thermometer touches bottom of beaker .: does not read the temp of the water
-Stir the water for even heat distribution
