I started tutoring English recently and found out how much photocopying really costs when you need to copy half a textbook even at Officework's 7c a pg rate. And I was going to get one of those office/school massive photocopiers until someone suggested a multifunction printer, cause my printer and scanner needed an updating anyway.

Anyway, I'm torn between getting a really cheap one (something under $250 like the hp PSC1315 or Lexmark X1170), but I heard that in the long run the ink costs are hideous (?), and getting a more expensive laser multifunction printer (like the Canon MF3110 (approx. $500), which pisses me off cause it only does black and white printing). All I know is that a laser one would probably be more economic in the long run, but am I really going to run up >$250 ink costs? How much does ink cost generally anyway? I can't seem to find out what ink those two particular cheap printers need exactly. Am I just better off sticking to Officeworks printing?

Half a textbook isnt that past the copyright range?

Laser in the long run are cheaper, yes you could run up >$250 in ink particularly in the long run.

Colour photocopies aren't really needed.

If you find 7c/page at Officeworks expensive you should definitely get a laser one, as inkjet can cost from 20c/page. However it may be more economical to use Officeworks, since most laser printers will rarely go below 5-6c/page (unless it's a Kyocera) and may turn out more expensive.

As for the inkjets Lexmark has a particularly high total cost of ownership. You'll be looking at >20c/page for a black and white copy.

10% is the copyright limit.... lol

I think you would quite quickly use $500 photocopying on an inkjet - less if you used non-genuine catridges though.

At 7 cents a page, I think that'd work better than the $40+ a cartridge, if you think about it. More effort I suppose, but money saved.

I think it could even be cheaper to buy more textbooks.
