For lewis dot diagrams would one draw a line to show a covalent bond or just place the two electrons next to each other

it doesn't matter, it's not wrong at all to draw a line to show a bond but you should ask your teacher to see what they look for (my teacher prefers us to draw the dots, hence the name lol)

Personally I prefer lines however placing the electrons next to each other isn't wrong either. Just be wary as in some marking criteria's I've seen for past exams you'd get marked down for not doing lines.
