Question-How does political consideration warp honor in the play King Henry IV Part 1

Shakespeare through his play King Henry IV Part 1 explores the philosophical idea that power eliminates honor, through how the character's are affected by it and what it does to their honor or honorable goals. The historical context of the play provides further basis to the philosophical idea and helps to realize what Shakespeare was trying to achieve.

The zeitgeist of Shakespeare era was realpolitik essentially practical politics as a result audiences of the 16th century was more concerned if a ruler was capable rather than the ruler saying he was capable, as well as people having a fascination with power and politics; as a result this historical context influences the play to a large degree which manifests in the philosophical idea being apart of the one of the key themes of the play virtue vs pragmatism. This is evident in Act 5 Scene 1 in Falstaff's soliloquy, to quote a line "Honor is a mere scutcheon" is thematic of virtue vs pragmatism as well as political consideration warping honor as through the battle at Shrewsbury Falstaff realizes honor has no value, and is something purely decorative and determined by those who are political adept and pragmatic. This thematic quote helps to encapsulate how political consideration warps honor as it can shatter its perception and reduce into nothing as evident by Falstaff's soliloquy. Therefore through the historical context of the play it brought importance to politics or realpolitik by being apart of a key theme of the play and having an adverse affect on the characters and on honor.

The characters and their goals serve to act as examples of how political consideration warps honor. This is evident through Henry IV, Prince Hal and Hotspur. Each character and their honorable goals not only help to emphasize the theme of virtue vs pragmatism but to help provide importance to how political consideration warps honor as each character fails to achieve their honorable goal due to political consideration. Henry IV fails to crusade Jerusalem due to the political situation of England, Hotspur dies due to his incapability in handling politics and being pragmatic, evident by Worcester's metaphorical remark about him "What wasp-stung and impatient fool"; Prince Hal fails to achieve his ultimate goal of achieving honor and rising above his former self due to Falstaff being more political keen rather than being honorable and respectable as displayed when he decides to take credit in killing Hotspur despite Hal doing it as he hopes to rewarded well because of it. Therefore through the failures of each character, Shakespeare expounds on how political consideration warps honor as each character's honorable goal gets overturned because of politics.

In conclusion, the philosophical idea of political consideration warping honor is explored to an extent through Shakespeare's King Henry IV Part 1, as shown through how politics were influential during Shakespeare's time which resulted in that influence forming into a key theme of the play and that influence becoming a philosophical idea. It is also explored to an extent through the failures of each character as they were unable to achieve their honorable goals due to politics which displays how powerful politics can be in the front of honor.
