This question is needed for my physics practical:

With the spectroscope, there's a diffraction grating that diffracts light into its emission spectrum right? If so, what is the diffraction grating built out of? Thanks.

Ooh.... it doesn't really matter what a diffraction grating is built out of, as longs as it is opaque. A diffraction grating itself contains many thin pieces of opaque material (say plastic or thin wires) placed next to each other to form slits. It's the gaps between each slit and the width of the slit opening that diffracts the light.

Someone who's doing the hsc needs to give a real example from your labs.
