The net is much older than that friend. Read

Let's be honest:-

a) The internet is full of unsolicited crap. I can post something on the internet as truth, without you knowing otherwise (wiki anyone?). I suggest you visit the library and research there

To get into a book, everything is overviewed by panels of experts to ensure it's all on the level and alike. Much more reliable :)

b) It's easier to block everything and allow what you want, than to block what you don't want and keep the rest. That way, you little kiddies have less chance to waste time in class :)

c) STUDY AT HOME

IN SUMMARY

Read a book.

The end.
No no no no Chris I love you but you are completely wrong. As education becomes increasingly reliant on access to the internet, the new system is nothing but redundant.

Just take my Ancient research lesson today as an example. We were booked into one of the computer rooms because the library is there for individuals, not entire classes. I have no access to books, we are booked into this room under the assumption that any information we need can be accessed by the computers. Of course, literally three-quarters of the sites I need are blocked under "Uncategorised" making the entire lesson a complete waste of time.

Frankly, there's no excuse for any kind of censorship. But this is just so ridiculous it kind of hurts. I'm not looking to play games, or watch porno, I'm trying to find some fucking Xenophon quotes to corroborate my sexy Herodotus sources.

Won't help you -- Same filter.

On the other hand, one of the latest shock sites isn't blocked by DET.. rather funny considering how anal their blocking seems otherwise. :)

its funny, i remember a time right at the beginning of about term 2 where even this site was blocket by DET.
Ancient History research becomes very very difficult if every site but one on the house of the Labyrinth is blocked. It is really really frustrating trying to study for exams at school too, because the school library skims the top of the topics (ancient history for the "punters" as my teacher likes to call it).

also, feel for those people who don't have access to the internet at home, who have to come to school to do their schoolwork and/or research for assesments... i know a few people like that and they have it hardest.

Contrary to my earlier post in this topic, Google cached links no longer work. :(

Oh well, I never use computers at school for work anyway.

Google caching works again :)
I think the whitelist is more of a hinder, if a student can look at a ten minute video of surfing, why not, saves them spending days looking for a whole new video site.

Fuck the DET. It was a waste of time, effort and money attempting to uphold an old fashion ideal of protecting the youth from the truth. It doesn't even work, unless it was made to frustrate.

Try ww.themoki.com it used to work. If you know any proxy sites, please post them. Unfortunately DET probably reads this and block's the proxy site.

Personally, hate the extent of the blocking. It makes the net useless, you may as well not have it at all. I feel sorry for all those out there who do not have Internet at home. Their education must really be suffering.

You can try to write letters to the newspapers, someone needs to do something about the issue. It's just bullshit.
