hi guys
can someone plz tell me the quickest way in balancing an equation with an example of the combustion of octane
very important for the hsc

What do you mean by quickest way? You just look at it until you've found the right combination so that LHS=RHS with no common factors.

Tackle the element with atoms in most molecules first.
For combustion, do C, then H, then O.
But the easiest way is to learn the balanced numbers for the hard equations... instead of getting confused in the exam.

For incomplete combustion, can you just make it up, since it would be varied amounts of each product?

Yep, since you'll get differing amounts of C and CO depending on how much oxygen is present

always start balancing using the element which appears only in the one molecule.
