For adv. english I recieved an assess mark of 84 and an exam mark of 80 giving me a hsc mark of 82. However, I kept track of my assess results throughout the year, the lowest being 88% for my trial exam. Why was I given an assessment mark of 84? Was it because I was below standard for my exam mark and it got dragged down?

Your internal (school) marks aren't used in determining your assessment mark. All that matters is your internal rank. (correct me if I'm wrong there)

In simple terms, if your internal rank is, say, third, then your assessment mark is the 3rd highest exam mark achieved by anyone in your school for that subject. It isn't quite that simple since they too get scaled (again) but it works essentially on that principle.

Hope that answers your question.
