Hi people

you know how acidity of oxides decrease across the group from left to right
basic to acidic

wat i dont understand is

since group 2 elements can have oxidation state of +2

eg Ba(OH)2 wouldnt barium oxide be more basic that KOH?(cos it has 2 OH)

but basicity decrease going across the groups so its confusing

can so can someone clear that up?

i think it is more referrin to metal oxides are general basic whereas non metal ( those towards the right hand side of the periodic table) are generally acidic...

I agree - I'd treat it more as a generalised description that a strict rule.

Take period 3, for example:
Basic oxides on the left (Na2O, MgO)
then amphoteric (Al2O3) and 'neutral' (SiO2)
then acidic (P2O5, SO3, Cl2O7)
